Cost of CS aluminum mast

Has any one bought the spec'd mast parts recently? I just received a quote from the local Metal Supermarkets  :shock:    and I am suffering sticker shock. The (2) @ 114" 2 1/2*.083 is $426.50 ( I have to purchase the entire 144" stock) and the (2) @ 72" 2.25*.065 is $103 for a grand total of $562.59 picked up locally. Should I keep shopping? I am waiting for a response from Speedy Metals which is also local.

Graham, can I use the 12 ft lengths of 2 1/2 and reduce the upper length of the 2 1/4 so as not to scrap so much stock?

I bought the tubing on 2/19/10 from onlinemetals.com for $255.96 including shipping. It arrived in Louisiana in 4 days.

Wow! :shock:  Yes, Keep shopping.  I didn't buy recently but it wasn't a decade ago.

I bought from a place an hour away and took an afternoon off to pick it up.  My price was more a little less than Bagneux's but he probably got the better deal since he didn't have to pick it up.

I paid  about 3 bucks a foot locally at a welding shop for the 2.5" stock. Shop around and use a fabricator or welding shop's purchasing power.

I just bought 8 ft of 3 inch tube  (6061 T6)  and 8 ft of 2.5 inch tube, per the plan , the cost plus shipping was only $144.00.

I am going to make the top section of mast from wood.

onlinemetals.com  are in the state of Washington and in Ohio. They were also recommended  by Graham...

3 inch  x  .125 6061 T6                      I used this thickness for the bottom tube only. this tube in .065 is 118.00 for 8 ft..  shipping is cheap at 8 ft tubes. Longer than that they have to go by truck freight.
