We launched the boat Thursday. http://louisianaketch.blogspot.com/ My friend Randy is really proud of his new boat. The wind did not cooperate very well with max winds at 5 mph. Wind Ketcher got up to 3.7 mph according to the GPS. We had to motor back to the dock because of no wind.

I bought the tubing on 2/19/10 from onlinemetals.com for $255.96 including shipping. It arrived in Louisiana in 4 days.

I have some southern yellow pine available and some white oak. SYP is what is mostly available to me and is what I am making the king plank from. My lumber yard lets me pick out the clear boards, grin.

Welcome. I too am building a CS17, hull #240. I read the SCA article about the No Frills 15 and wondered about your observations and thoughts on that boat. It looked interesting.

However, there is a problem. When I went back to the shop after lunch, the top two wires of the bow bottom panels had broken and there is a 3" gap at the topmost portion. Can I just get a couple of strong friends to push them together while I rewire or are greater measures called for? I am thinking of using a couple of zip ties because I can tighten them easily when the panels are pushed together. Otherwise the boat looks great and we are excited about the build. Loy

Good. The 72" measurement was what was confusing me. I had even used my architect's scale to help lay out on the ply and all my measurements matched what I had taken from the plan. The drawing on the plywood looks just like the plan drawing I knew it could not be that tough since so many have built the CS 17. Thanks so much.

Thank you. So, 48" from where the 1/4 butts against the 3/8, the forefoot is 1 1/4" above the baseline. At the 56" mark it is 2 1/4" above the baseline and at the 64" mark it is 5 15/16" above the baseline. Finally at the 72" mark the forwordmost point of the bow is 11 1/4" above the baseline. What does the 21 1/2" reference? Loy

I finally got started marking and cutting out the ply yesterday until it got to 100 degrees. I have a question about the 1/4" ply portion of the bottom. The plans show that the piece of 1/4" is 72" long. However when I follow the drawing, there are 12" from the dotted line where it butts the 3/8 ply, another 36", two 8" segments and the final segment. I read above the drawing that the two 8" segments plus the final segment equal 21 1/2". This adds up to 69 1/2", not 72" I have drawn on the ply to the 69 1/2" markings and it looks like the plan drawing. I have NOT cut it out yet. I ask for your advice. Thanks.

Wow. What a great response. Thanks to all of you. I have visited John's and Ray's websites in the past. This will be my 10th or 11th boat to build. I have lots of 1088 meranti (1/2", 3/8", 1/4") to build either boat in my 16 x 24 shop. I was thinking that the weekender would be a cheaper build but was wondering if the additional cost was worth spending on the CS 17. I actually emailed Graham at B&B about the Belhaven which is what I would love, but that was before my being forced to reconsider because of a medical condition. I figured that it would cost at least an additional $2000. In 2004 I saw a Princess 22 at the Mandeville, Louisiana Wooden Boat show and fell in love with it. Did Charlie build that boat? I currently have a Bolger Surf and an 8' v-bottom pram of traditional construction. I need a boat which I can sit in, but not on the sole of the boat. I had considered a Nancy's China at one time but have reconsidered due to cost(I did purchase 12 oz. biaxial tape and 25 yards of 6 oz. cloth to build her). I have even looked at the CLC Pocketship. I currently have plans for the CS 17, Weekender, Stambaugh Catbird 16, Devlin's Nancy's China, and Bolger Micro. Now that I have moved to north Louisiana, the Micro is not feasible. I actually completed the hull, but lost it to Hurricane Rita in 2005. Although I would like a cuddy, it is not essential. I sail mainly on local lakes and my son lives on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for that occasional voyage into Mississippi Sound. Winds here are light in the summer. My wife would like a cuddy, but a dodger may well do the job. I have even thought of adding a cuddy to the CS17. It sounds like the CS 17 would be worth the extra expense. I have made several polysails before. The sail on the Surf is from Duckworks. That may be an option too. Again, thank you. I would love to hear any other suggestions. I have a friend who may buy the 1/2" ply and the plans for the Weekender. I guess I need to sell the biax tape and the extra plans.

I have all the plywood and the plans to build a CS 17 or a Weekender. The problem now is money since I have some health issues which will force me to retire about 5 years earlier than planned and I must pay off the house. This will be the last boat I can build. I am forced to make a decision based on which can be built for the least money, or at least the best value if they are similar in cost. I know the CS 17 is a better boat, but is it that much better for the difference in cost? Are there some ways I could cut on costs for the CS 17? I know I could make wooden masts and use the laced on sails. I know some of you have built and sailed both and I would value your opinions. Thank you for your help.

After researching the forum archives, it seems that builders discourage building wooden masts. I really like wooden masts for esthetic reasons and would prefer having them to aluminum. Are wooden masts a bad idea for the CS 17? One piece masts are not an issue. Racing is out of the question because my boat will be the only sailboat on the lake. I do have the plans in hand, workshop finished and Joubert ply on hand. However, I am having second thoughts about the CS 17 because of the mast issue.

My shop (24' x 16")will be finished in the next two or three weeks and then I will be able to start collecting good wood. Where did you get your plywood? If only I didn't have to pay for another wedding, I could build lots of boats. LOL.
