Reintroduction and CS 17 hull# 284

Hello,

Some of you may already know me from the main board or some of the other building forums on the web. My name is Jim Stumpf and I have built several boats including a Vacationer "Rudunyet" and the No Frills 15 "Primrose".

I have been studying plans for an open cat ketch and thought that I had decided on Bateau's CK 17 but I have always had the Core Sound simmering in the back of my noodle. I even ordered the CK 17 plans and all of the epoxy and glass for it but I have decided to follow my heart and go ahead with the CS 17.

So I am here to say that I will be checking in with updates and I have to say that Graham has gone above and beyond with the details in his plans, they are the best that I have seen to date and I look forward to getting started.

I just sold a Mirror Dinghy that I restored last winter to raise building funds and I have spent the last couple of weekends rebuilding a mid 80's sunfish and I just put that up for sale today. As soon as the sunfish is gone I am off to pick up the merranti ply to get started.

Good to see those of you I know and it is very nice to meet those of you that I do not know yet.

I thought you had dropped off the face of the earth. Good to see that I was wrong and you are still around. You will not be sorry with the CS-17. Graham has designed a lot of winners and that is one of them.

Jim,  If you take the plan and sail profile of teh CK17 and place it over that of teh CS17, you will find that they are an almost exact match.  The CS was done first and what that says about Bateau, I'm not certain.

There are several differences in the hulls though.  In every case, the differences in the CK take the boat in the wrong direction for either utility of use or performance. I will leave it to you to see these differences and discover what each means.

You made the right choice.

Welcome. I too am building a CS17, hull #240. I read the SCA article about the No Frills 15 and wondered about your observations and thoughts on that boat. It looked interesting.

To me there is a substantial difference between the layout of hull volume on the CS-17 and the CK-17. The CK also has a fair bit more lead then the CS. The mainsail/mizzen relationship is more 60/40 on the CK, while 55/45 (likely less then this) on the CS.

If anything I think the CK is more a knock off (or should I say influenced by) Jay Benford's 18' cat ketch (design #204) which I believe predates both CS and CK designs being done in 1982 and has all but been in public domain since publishing his "Small Craft Plans" book in the early 90's. This boat (Benford's) is also flat bottom and has similar volume distribution. This was a refinement to a previous design of a 16' cat ketch, produced 5 or 6 years previously.

Thanks for the warm welcome back, although I really didn't go anywhere I always lurk to see what everyone is up to.  Here is what I was up to last winter and this summer.

I finished construction on this Mirror last winter and sailed it all summer she is in a new home in WI

I've been helping Meg build her sof kayak

And I am currently finishing a sunfish restoration
