Roy,

I just looked at my CS 17 Materials list sheet and it says the seat stringers should be 16'.....It also says "cockpit side stringers" are  12'. So maybe you did get a sheet for the " '20 ".

Where in the Philippines are you located? ( Everyone always says "Manila"since it's the only city most Americans know about...) I spent a few years down on Negros Occidental  ( New Sagay)with the Peace Corps  (many years ago) and I can imagine how much fun you're going to have over there with 7,000 + islands to sail to/from !

Hi Roy,

I was reading a series of articles last night written by Jan Nicholaison about constructing his CS 17.  He mentioned that on his plans there was a mistake about the stringer length being stated as 18 ft. but the actual measurement was less than 15 ft.  It might be just a typographical error rather than the wrong sheet.

Good luck with your build.  I hope you'll keep us updated.

Roy,

Just happen to have my plans out for CS 17  #144.  The plan sheet entitled "Hull Panel Instructions" calls for 18.5 ft. for the side stringers.  The materials list calls for 16 ft for "seat stringers" and 12 ft for "cockpit side stringers."  For the side panels I went with 18.5.  Yes it is a 17 ft long boat but the stringer is not layed out in a straight line and the sides curve creating a distance of more than 17.

that makes sense, but on the hull cutout sheet, it shows the stringer is less than 180". I also had a look at a copy of a friend's cs20 plans today and our hull panel instruction sheets are exactly the same, with the exception of the little bit on that right hand corner which says what boat it's for  ::). would 180" be a safe length for this stringer? does the length even matter?

Regardless of what the plans say, the safest way to determine the length if the stringers is to measure once the side panels are scarfed together, being sure to leave room at each end for the glass tape at the joints.  Most likely, its somewhere around 16 feet, so you can use 16' lumber (or whatever the nearest nominal length you can get).

Roy, I don't know why or how you got the material list for the CS20. We can email you the CS17 list if you would like.

I always take material lists with a grain of salt because everyone has access to different materials. For instance that stringer on the CS17 is about 14'10" long, here in the US you have to buy a 16' length. I say "about" because it is tapered out forward of the forward bulkhead even though it is not needed, or it would create a hard spot and cause the side to become unfair aft of the bulkhead. Then there is the named size versus the actual size versus the size needed. I try to use stock sizes where I can but that stringer is 3/4" thick and 1" wide, the 1" wide is not a stock width here and the builder must decide what he will rip those two stringers from. I typically will by a 1 x 6 (3/4" x 5 1/2") or 1 x8 even though it is more wood than I need for the stringers because you are going to need other pieces for the rest of the boat. When I go the to the lumber yard I like to look at the quality of the wood first, for instance the 1x6 stack may be low and has been well picked through so I will move on to the 1 x 8 stack etc.

Metric countries have similar sizes but you don't have to slavishly use the imperial sizes as given, for instance, 3/4" is 19.05mm so if 20mm is your standard size then that is what you should use.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for replying. I have the cs17 materials list alright, and it does say there to get a 16' foot length of lumber for the side stringers, however the "hull panel instruction" sheet I have says 18'6". a typo error maybe?

14'10" Got it! Thanks. I sort of figured it would be around that length. just wanted to be sure..

cheers!
