New Feature: Easier "YouTube" video embedding

Have a YouTube video you want to share?  Just put the URL, from the browser's address bar, in your message.  Add a blank line above and below it.  As an example, look at this fake URL:

http://www.FakeYouTube.com/watch?v=UgXoI5aB9YI

That's just a plain URL, without any brackets, embed code, etc.  It will work if its a real YouTube URL (this is the one above, but with "youtube" instead of "FakeYouTube" in the URL):

The option works with most video and audio sites that allow sharing of content.  Here's a list:

Hmm...  I see the fake one as a url and the real one as two side-by-side boxes.  Each box has the dreaded red x. (I'm using IE 6.0 SP2)

I just cut and pasted a youtube url into a post and I see the boxes with the "x"es (the honda outboard warrantee thread in the B and B forum).

And I keep getting a security notice about installing a flash player.  Maybe it's me (but I could see the video posts before).

Sometimes that's due to security software (McAfee Security Suite, Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm, etc.)  See the post at http://www.messing-about.com/forums/index.php?topic=5197.0 for more information on that.  Especially if you've added new software recently.

This site asks your browser "where it is" (called the "referer header" and yeah, they did misspell it).  The security suites often don't like to reply, so they don't, and the site then refuses to serve the content to them.  In other cases, the security software won't display anything that isn't originating on the site its looking at.

Well this is a really BAD video......put up for a test. This is a self steering wind vane I built about 5 years ago. Video isn't too hot, but the contraption does work really well.

I have a much better video related to this that was shot on a Hi8 video camera, that has been copied to a DVD. Supposed to be a .mpeg file, but Windows Movie Maker doesn't recognize it as a viable format to work with.

Anybody have some instructions on how to "rip" bits and pieces from it from the DVD players or editing software?

I'm getting the single video box like I should. I have IE 7.0.5730.11 and the most up-to-date flash player. Before the Flash player update a week or so ago, I was not able to play any Flash video.

If you have a digital file, the best all-around converter is free, and called Super (see http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html for details).  To rip content off of DVDs, you usually have to use several programs, as none of the large software developers want to deal with potential legal hassles from the content providers.  But you can find tutorials on how to do it at places like this site:  http://www.wikihow.com/Rip-a-DVD

Okay, I finally went ahead and clicked "Install" so now I can see the video.  Now it's two side by side boxes with the same video (which isn't a problem really).

You and Chris are getting the same thing, two of the boxes.  I'm using the latest versions of Firefox (v3.04) and Internet Explorer (v7.057xxxxxxxx), and only getting one box.  I wonder what's causing the "video box stutter"?

OK, knowing how much trouble it is to convert video from my Hi8 recorder, what do most folks who make YouTube videos shoot them with? Digital cameras (like my Fuji) or digital camcorders? What format is best?

Or is there a way to hook up my Hi8 recorder and copy it directly to the computer?

It's starting to look to me like video is all about memory (cameras.....not mine). You need lots of it.

I've had pretty good success using the following components:

Vid Camera:  Canon ZR-80 (not a super high end camera)

OS:  Windows XP

Editing Software:  Whatever that default software is that comes on Windows XP.

Also, when I transferred these from the camera to the computer, I didn't use the highest resolution setting.  Meaning, if you're going for dvd quality, it will look better than these.  I did these knowing they'd go on the internet.

It says "Bait Ice Cream" on that big floating ice cream cone.  I also have to ask, do they have big floating ice cream cones on all the lakes in the midwest?  For the bathrooms, do they have giant inflatable toilets on the docks?  You are supposed to be getting back to nature, not imitating the back side of the Strip in Vegas!

I'm not even sure you can sail on our lakes anymore; Lake Casitas near where I live doesn't allow outside boats any more because of zebra mussles (or some kind of critter).
