Moccasin under construction in Finland

Hi,

have made a slow and dusty start to build a Moccasin 2.

Got the plans this week and tried to figure out how to proceed with the plywood.

The plans are very good, and the CD gives you a lot of info how the process will go on, nice pictures.

Have noticed that the readers of this forums want to see pictures, so I made one after the first session. Out of the dust came 2 plywood pieces that hopefully will get more company and will turn in to a canoe. Picture taken with the mobile phone so the quality is not so good, covers perhaps some of my handwork errors... .

think I made a mistake as I think I should have drilled the holes for the plastic wires before I glued all pices to gather! But now I have somehow to manage it afterwards....

Are there some rules how close the holes should be to each other, and how far from the edge should they be drilled?

Work is slow partly because the spear time to work on the Moccasin is limited, and I have chosen a slow Epoxy, as I have never before worked with Epoxy.

It is an ongoing learning process. I broke my Moccasin, as my plywood was false, the grain not running from fore to aft, instead running upside/down!

So I have to hunt some new ply and start all over again!

As we all love pictures here one describing my mood and situation:)

Darn, Kenneth, I can feel your frustration, having had similar things happen to me.  I am sorry that this has happened.  On the good side, education always cost something and you are learning from these experiences and how to recover from them.  You will be a better and more experienced boat builder as a result.

Ouch!  I'm sorry to hear that.

I broke my CS17 when I was unfolding it but I was fortunate that I was able to repair it without spending more money on plywood.

Kenneth and I have had a lot of emails trying to solve his problem and I really feel bad for him. It became apparent that the grain ran the wrong way. I have since added the grain direction to the plans, it does not occur to us as the grain always runs along the long axis of the ply. I have seen some strange sheets from the Baltic, I have some 5' x 5' sheets of birch from over there.

Hello everyone!

I have been following the forum for a little while and would like to echo the sentiments of all newbies, in that I find this forum very interesting and helpful. It certainly encouraged me to have a go, and build my own boat a Spindrift 11 hull nr 690. Having a river at the bottom of the garden seemed to demand we have a boat!

Like Kentsu I used Baltic ply with the grain running in the wrong direction.  However I decided to scarf one full sheet with a half sheet as per instructions but with the grain for the stressed end running in the right direction. This seems to have worked. I hope it will stand the test of time! For now we have a row boat which is proving a great hit with all the family. So much so that I decided to order a set of sails to see how she performs on the local lakes.

I feel for you Kentsu, but maybe you could build the moccasin out of scarfed up Baltic birch ply.

Don't lose heart. Try again.
