Maria CS20 104 Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Ended up with 40 board ft. of Walnut, 15 of hickory, and 30 board foot of Redwood, along with all the fir I was talking about. Any ideas of what to do with the Redwood. Thinking of splitting the planks and using for combing acents but concerned about it being too soft? Sure is pretty material and would love to incorporate with the maple, walnut, and fir. Any ideas fellow adventurers? Jim Quote

Howard Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 This is a picture of the daggerboard and rudder for the Spindrift. The dark strips are redwood, leftover from when my house was built. The rest are scraps of doug fir, hem fir (light color), and western red cedar. When finished bright, redwood goes dark. Darker than the occume, which is what the rudder is and probably darker than mahogany. Quote
markja Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 I would save it. Probably will be a better investment than anything in the stock market for sure. We now pay around $8 / bd ft for clear all-heart vertical grain. We still use some redwood in the custom wood window business where I work. It is great stuff. very stable but a little soft for many applications. MARK Quote
Gordy Hill Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Floorboards! Redwood would be perfect. It's light weight and really won't care if it's submerged once in a while. Also it's removable and not really a structural part of the boat. It would be stunning finished bright. Quote
Dale Niemann Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Lively has redwood floorboards/sleeping boards finished bright. I now think this is not a good idea. They are too slick. Oil finish or bright with sand is probably required. Not sure what I will do. Basically, so far I have only used them for the sleeping boards next to the centerboard. Dale Quote
