High C Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 Tim, Yep, it's going well with the Weekender. I cut the cabin back about two feet and extended the cockpit seating a like amount. I'm leaving the back of the cabin open, sort of like a fixed dodger. It looks good that way, good scale. I'm almost thru glassing the bottom. I finally got the hang of it, and have started to smooth it out with lightweight West 410 filler added to the epoxy to make fairing compound. This stuff seems perfect. Goes on easy and levels nice and smooth! Much easier than Bondo. Maybe I'll be ready to turn her right side up in a week or two! Quote

Tim Diebert Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 WHAT!!? Are you hardahearin? Yes, use the 4200. It is a polysuphide base. No, do not use silicone. Clear or otherwise. Make sure you use plenty of bedding comp...get some squeeze out. Clean up as instructed. Check back in an hour or two because it may have squeezed out some more...clean up again...unless you like the 'blown gasket look'. For a guy who spent $800 on lathe tools...you sure are a cheap bugger. Go a buy a coupla tubes of Boatlife or Sika. Stop yer whinin.... That furnitureboat is surely worth the $25 or so it might cost you...just don't give the receipts to the taxman...give him your silicone receipts. Quote

capt jake Posted March 4, 2003 Author Posted March 4, 2003 oK, this thread got a little off track, and it was fun!! Did we ever come to a conclusion on how to seal my plexiglass portlights?? I have some 3M 4200, which I am told from a boat supply house, is the way to go. I cleans off easy with a spray cleanser they also sold me. It is white. The only thing the lable says is that it is an adhesive sealant. I really only need a sealant. Will this remove in hte future if need be?? :? Quote

capt jake Posted March 4, 2003 Author Posted March 4, 2003 I know that Sika is very simular to 5200, which is considered an adhesive. I used Sika to glue the foot rests in place on hte 'yak. The footrests will not budge!! 4200 is 'supposed' to be less aggressive. ????? I have not experimented with BOat Life yet. I have enough 4200 to do the job (and then some) just want some more thoughts bofore I use it. Quote
Craig Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 For God's sake use the 4200 and be done with it Jake! It is the best for the job and cleans up easily if you ever have to remove the ports. This is what I have used on the Saralee. I also use this for bedding and general sealing tasks. Useing anything else is asking for trouble. At 9 and change bucks for a small tube it is affordable.... Or buy the big tube if you are going to use that much at one time. Follow the squeeze out recommendations posted by the others. Quote

Most of the time you don't even notice the very fine little white line of sealant around the area being attached. And then it just makes it look clean and crisp against the background. It holds really well and cleanup is a snap. :wink: Quote

capt jake Posted March 8, 2003 Author Posted March 8, 2003 Well heck, I was using the 4200 and very pleased and then.... the danged screws I bought are about a 1/16" too short!! I hate when a plan falls apart!! Unfortunately, the only place that has these type of screws is closed on the weekends, so no I must wait. Bummer. I need to get this done as the Mrs's found a new place, the type of place 'we just must have'! I am in agreement with her, so I must tidy up and get things 'ship shape'! I must start cleaning windows, mowing the lawn, sweeping out the shop, throwing away my prized pieces of stuff!! :D Do you know how long it took to aquire all of my prized stuff!!! :shock: :shock: Quote
