I joined this message board so I can keep on top of what my Dad is writing about me.

Can you believe he has posted over 1500 times on this board! No wonder he always say's he is too busy to help me sand my boat!

I hate sanding! I hate Scraping! Can you believe he told me I had to scrape the entire boat and not use any power sanders! He told me I needed to scrape it as flat as a piece of glass!

When he built his Nesting Spindrift for the Maine, Boats, Homes, and Harbors Show I noticed he didn't scrape his entire boat and the Random Orbital Sander and longboard were his good friends!

Scraping stinks! :twisted:

Now I am using the longboard myslef.

Dad told me I needed to have the practice on scraping and sanding.

Building boats is much more fun than finishing boats, and sailing them is more fun than either.

I am waiting for my dad to allow me to finish sanding my Spindrift 10 in order to paint the outside of it. Right now he has the sails to his CS20 drying in the garage so I can't make dust. Then I can start rigging the boat!

Welcome aboard Joshua. From another pro builder.

Sanding and scraping are part of boatbuilding. Goes with the territory. Besides, once you've scraped one once, you learn how to work clean and get up the drips and runs BEFORE they cure.

Hi Joshua and welcome to the group!

Are you close to Sam's or Ben's age? Sam (11) hates sanding or scraping and will escape it every time at the first opportunity, while Ben (10) will sand and sand, and if I don't watch him closely will sand stuff he doesn't need too. I suspect this will not last.

Sanding can boring but I like to do it to see how the finish is coming. It gives the opportunity to check each square inch. What I hate about it is that it takes so much time and I am always chomping at the bit to get the project finished. In my mind I can see the finish line so close and yet so far away....LOL. I have screwed up projects trying to take short cuts at this step in the process and can (usually) contain my impatience at this point.

Way to go Joshua. Look, I've heard your father say how much he loves to scrap and hand sand things. It's one of the true joys in life he once said. With this in mind you may be able to work out a trade, say you wash his car all summer long, for a negotiated amount of hours of his scraping and sanding your boar. After all he's the one that knows what he's doing and you want it to look good right? You have limited leverage in which to extort some work out of him, but I'll bet you're creative and can come up with something.
