Compared to a Princess of Bellhaven, this looks kinda puny, but hopefully she will float. About all done but some sanding, paint and varnish. Would like to do a test float first to make sure the oar sockets are in the right spot to fit me. Also want to do a test of a sculling oar off the transom and dont' want to paint before that. That is not a two tone paint job. The front has been final sanded, the back half is just epoxy coated, and needing to be sanded.

That is a birdsmouth mast and they are not as easy to do as some would have you believe. :)

You're going to have to find ocassion to pull that rudder and daggerboard up so that spectators can admire it. Let's see: the db can come up going downwind, but I don't think anyone will be able to admire the rudder underway!

I haven't done a birdsmouth spar yet but I'll bet the second one is a lot easier than the first one.

That is true....about almost every aspect of building her. The second time around would be faster, easier....and I suspect would look better as well. Experience is a great teacher.

And up or down, that board doesn't look too bad. It's still shiny slick from just the epoxy, but should varnish up pretty well. Amazing what you can make with a bunch of scrap boards. :)

As for the birds mouth you did good

You haven't seen it up close.

Just out of curiosity, what does a regular mast weigh? As near as I can tell, this one is coming in around 10 pounds before it is finished and hardware installed. Total length is around 17 feet and it is 2 1/4 inches at the base. Solid cored to about 4' above the mast step (above point where boom will attach).

The other problem with the birdsmouth is length. It is one piece, so unless I can find a way to hang it on the old Suburban, hauling it around may be a problem. It may get relegated to "Sunday go to meeting" status and I'll wind up building the 3 piece anyway.

Good, bad or ugly, I've operated under the theory that if it hangs or bolts on, it's not the end of the world if I have to do it again.
