Max motor size

I checked out the B&B web site and did not see the answer to my question. What is the maximin recommended motor size, HP wise, for the CS 20. I saw that the CS 15 has a maximum recommended of 15 HP. I have access to a cheap/free older 35 HP motor and was wondering if this was too much for the CS 20. In this case, the boat would be used only as a motor powered fishing boat, no sailing. I am building the after deck version, not sure if this would make any difference.

The short answer is no. It would be possible to reinforce the transom to take it but 35HP is far more horsepower than you can use.

My brother picked up the 35 HP motor in a boat trade and had no use for it. He was going to give it to me for free if I wanted it. Doesn't it figure that it would be too powerful to use. How large a motor would you recommend for the CS 20, just in case he comes across another good deal?

Take the free motor and trade it for a smaller one.

5hp is more than enough.

If you want to run 35 hp ... buy a speed boat.

Don't sell your engine. I can think of several dozen runabouts, fishing, skiing, cruising, etc. boats that would love to be built around it. You can't have enough engines about, or boats for that matter.

I have a 5.5 HP outboard and I agree that it is enough for an auxiliary motor on a sailboat like the CS 20. I have used it for years on a Catalina 22. But one of the things that attracted me to the Core Sound boats was their versatile. With the capability to sail, motor or row and with a draft of only 8 inches with the board up, they hit me as a boat that could be used for many things. If used as a fishing boat for 3 men with all of their tackle, coolers and other stuff for an all day fishing trip on the Tennessee River, a larger motor with better performance would be desirable, especially if the larger motor could be had for little to no extra cost.
