I am thinking of building a couple of Atkins boats: the Little Scout

http://www.boat-links.com/Atkinco/Sail/LittleScout.html ,

and the Vintage

http://www.boat-links.com/Atkinco/Dinks/Vintage.html

These were designed prior to plywood, so I will need to modify the plans somewhat...no problem really. I have discussed this with them.

Any Atkin design builder here? Opinions or discussions please? :)

Greg, I built a Wm. Atkin design catketch called Aunty Helen. She was 17' long and a sharpie hull with flat bottom. I had to build her from the table of offsets but it was not hard to lay out the plans from them. I built her back in about 1964 out of fir marine ply and fir chines, sheer clamps, frames, etc. She had a 1/4 steel plate centerboard. The masts were laminated Sitka spruce.

I used a pair of 8' oars for auxilary power.

She was a fabulous sailer and one of the most fun boats I ever owned. I've been sorry ever since I sold her about ten years after I built her.

Can I ask why? Why not build them as designed?

Thanks,

Noel

Mostly because I like newer technologies and the materials derived from them. Many of the older boat designs specify sizes and materials that are either no longer available or difficult to obtain. You could say I like the "New Yankee Workshop", not the old one. I plan to use epoxy too.

Greg if you want the Vintage boat, then take a look at this link. The boat is finely done. I figured up the parts for this boat, and with a simular sailrite kit, I think you may have in your boat about 750 in parts alone. This one is ready to go, with all the parts, extras and so forth, needing nothing but a pond as its next step from here. Just a thought.

Greg,

I built a sharpie to Atkin's "Alone" lines. I'm suspicious that these lines were never tested before publishing. I lofted full size and found a couple of glaringly bad numbers in the offsets. After setting up the molds it was obvious that the sheer clamp required edgeset that was beyond reason for a simple small boat. I sprung a batten around the molds and re established the sheer. The plans called for white cedar batten seam construction on the sides and cross planked cedar on the bottom. As you know white cedar is not available in Michigan in planking lengths and quality. I planked in Meranti plywood and was pleased with the ease of planking and the finished result. I see no problem substituting plywood for cedar in Atlin's simple designs.

Greg,

I'm in Branch MI about 20 miles east of Ludington.

Edit, I cleaned house in the computer and didn't realize I had not filled in my profile data again. I see it is up now.
