why can't I view images?

Anybody ever had this happen? For the last few weeks, my computer displays those little image boxes in place of photos, avatars and "emoticons." Clicking on thumbnails brings the photos up, but some photos are not thumbnails, so I get nothing. I want to look at Terry Dunn's mast step helper as I plan my own, and I can't bring it up! (My Pictures display fine. I think they're the same file type.)

Some Internet security software (such as Norton's Internet Security Suite) block some images that it believes are "tracking" images. For some reason, it seems to affect the images here on messing-about.com. I haven't been able to figure out why, except that I do have specific URLs to the images rather than relative ones.

We do use cookies, but only to help you log in. No other tracking information is collected. You can add "messing-about.com" to the "allowed sites" listing in your security software to get around it. The thread above has some specifics on different software.

Thanks, Frank! It turned out to be my Zone Alarm: I went into the site list and approved "private headers." That did the trick. Now I can study that mast stepper.

I could not recall what had caused this when it happened to my a while back, but as soon as you mentioned Zone Alarm I remembered that was the one that did it to me too. I do not use it at all anymore.

I don't have much problem with linked images in the forums, but the gallery is still a completely closed secret to me. Is it actually alive?

Hey Frank, how come some sites will allow linking into other image sites.

eg.... I can use all my imagestation photos on the woodenboat forum site but I can't here or on the 2 NZ sites I use. Is it to do with the HTML? ( whatever that is)
