OT: Mold killing

I am helping a friend remodel a bathroom. We found some black string mold. So we tore out the dry wall and flooring to get it all exposed. Now all we have to do is kill it! Any experience or recommeneded resources to get a sure kill of the mold?

We already plan to replace the easy to get to wood components, but there is some mold stains on the structural supports and in crevices that are going to be impossible to get without taking the entire wall, studs and all, out of the house.

This is by far the easiest treatment that actually kills the spores. I would recommend taking it one step further however based upon the recommendations of the specialist that consulted on my basement issues here in the Northwest.

His recommendation is that after it is completely dried that you vaccumn out all that you can work loose with a stiff brush. Wear a mask when you do so and close off the bathroom from the rest of the house. You don't want to inhale any of this. Then using either spray equipment or spray cans, cover all of the inner wall surfaces and studs with Kilz where there was mold and extend beyond those areas. This seals in any remaining spores and residual. It also seals up the wood so any new moisture doesn't have as much of a chance to promote mold growth.

Then be certain that you have a really good exhaust fan that is on a timer so it runs after you leave the room to remove moisture and help dry things up. Obviously the exhaust has to vent out doors, not just to an attic or crawl space.

We never had a problem after taking care of it in this fashion.

but it is so harsh on the lungs and whatever you are putting it on. a solution of vinegar will do the same job and is not nearly as harsh on the nose and eyes it also will remove mildew from fabrics and leather with no harm . just what we do. thought I'd pass it on. barnacle bill

I have a mold problem in my basement and a mold removal company said to use a product called "Timbor", it is suppose to kill mold and wood destroying insects. When we remodeled our bath we coated all the wood with a green chemical from Home Depot to kill and prevent mold.

We used the bleach treatement and seemed to get good results. I like the Kilz idea too.
