eyebolts

Re a discussion from a few weeks back about problems finding the long eyebolts, my local ACE stocks 10" eyebolts , 3/8th . Since ACE is probably pretty much a franchise stocklist, I would expect that most of them might have them in stock.

My local ACE didn't have an eyebolt long enough. While that may be 10" long, is that the overall length or is that the length of the shaft. In my case I needed one that had over 9" of length in the shaft. Most of the ones I saw were measured from the top of the eyebolt to the bottom. You lose quite a bit in the eye itself.

I ended up getting an eye nut and threaded rod and cutting it to length. In this photo you can see the eye nut threaded rod combination.

ohhhh....hmmmm...maybe spoke to soon. Actually, I was looking for eyenuts when I found the nominal 10" one. Will have to go home and measure.

I just counterbored up from the bottom the size of the washer and used a bolt that went up inside. Can't see the end of the bolt or the nut.

Doesn't HAVE to be full length ya know.

I did the same with the countersink on a 9 inch bolt. by the way, a wheel barrow handle works very well as a bow spirit. just the right size.

That's cool. I've seen some hickory axe handles, some with a rather elegant curve, that could make a decent tiller or emergency spare tiller too.

Working on lucite portlights tonight. Bolt was too short without counterdrilling but may be long enough to make bow eye. Still trying to make a fall messabout
