Rob Blackburn Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 We had a good 3 days shadowing the fleet in the Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay trailer boat race. It is 90km over 2 days. This year the wind deserted them though after recent years with sinkings and various other disasters. You could have sailed a Sabot it was so glassy. These are our photos if anyone is interested/bored at work. http://homepage.mac.com/blackburns/Expeditions/PhotoAlbum117.html The boat went well except that we noticed a crack in the transom due to the outboard. It seems that the thrust has acted like a lever and bowed in the back middle of the transom ie half way up from the bottom of the hull by about 2mm. This has caused the join between the coaming and the transom and the join between the deck and the transom to open up. Talking very tiny crack but... Have glued it back up but also am making a thrust pad to attach to the leg of the outboard so that when it is running it puts the push into the bottom of the transom rather than up the top. Have laminated some ply pieces and am going to cut out the middle today and fit them. Should be able to attach them with some sort of bolt/tie arrangement. Otherwise had a great trip except for all the sandflies... Rob Quote
Greg Luckett Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 The pics are great and it looks like you all had a great time. Thanks for the link Quote
Aaron_G Posted May 10, 2005 Posted May 10, 2005 Hey Rob, the picture of the brown box with the drawers that food is being prepared on...was that made to fit into a compartment or something on your boat? Seems like a great idea. Quote
Tim Diebert Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 Great pix once again Rob. Thanks for the link. Looks like lots of wind for your 2nd day. Did you get any measured wind speeds? The colour of the water is amazing. Those wee flys look like they would drive a man to drinkin. Quote
Rob Blackburn Posted May 17, 2005 Author Posted May 17, 2005 Sorry to be slow with answers... but been away again. The camping boxes/ camp kitchen is really in responce to my mate Col over the road who started the whole thing. The idea being you can leave all your gear strewn around the campsite and the dingos (native wild dogs) won't come and eat your stuff and or carry it away. Col's latest one actually conforms to the ratio of the golden rectangle as done by the old greeks so he is pretty cock a hoop on that one. Reckons it is a museum piece The one in the shots contains all stoves, coffee pots, eating equipment and cutlery etc. Have made 2 others. One was ridiculously overly complicated and proved best for playing cards on. The other one has had one outing but needs alteration as it is too hard to get to the bottom. The next comment re the sandfllies is so true. They can really challenge you to drink quickly to "get away" so to speak. They are shocking. When I was in Iceland years ago I saw places with thicker midges but none that can bite like this lot. I believe the west coast of NZ is bad for them too but they must be bad to equal or better these guys on a still morning. Rob Quote
Dale Niemann Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 Rob, Great shots, thanks. Please post some plans or measurements for the best of your greek boxes. They are really intriguing. Quote
