Scott Dunsworth Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 Is there a rule of thumb for port placement? Or do you place them where they work and are pleasing to the eye? What do you all think? Here are a few pictures with the trim ring taped in place. Also some pictures of my fuel tank locker, some open glove boxes. All these have slopped bottoms that will drain into the cockpit. Designer Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 Scott, You should find the vertical center at the forward, midpoint and aft end on the cabin side which is the dashed blue line. Then middle the ports on that line. The fore and aft position should have good visual balance. Just make sure that they don't interfere with your interior. Quote
brian watkins Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 It's probably an aesthetic decision more than anything, but from my armchair I shall dispense my preference! Imagine a line parallel to the sheer of the gunwale. Place the bottom of the porthole trim long that line. The horizontal center of the aft unit should just below the halfway mark between the top and bottom of the house side, and the forward unit will of course be higher. If the sheer is too extreme then a slight lessening of the curve may help. That's my druthers. If you look at the two Princess 22's that we've seen in the forum and on the B and B site, you'll see that the first one built is close to my preference, and the one built for Travis Votaw is different. His is much better, as you would expect. It's funny how choice and placement of windows or ports so changes the appearance of the whole boat. Just like sheer lines! Quote

On a boat with a long sheer and cabin I can see following the sheer. The belhaven has such a short cabin I don't know how that will look.
