NOBODY can remember this happening in the last 30- 40 years. It's supposed to snow down in the Rio Grande valley and if it does (It IS snowing where Laura's folks are) it'll break a 105 year old record. News report just in- first time it's snowed in this area on Christmas since 1918!!!!! There's NO equipment for clearing the stuff, the bridges are icing over and the only thing the highway dept can do is dump some sand on them. This is gonna bring this area to a standstill. The airport in Brownsville Texas is closed due to icing f'r cryin out loud!!!! That's just about MEXICO!!! I HATE COLD AND SNOW. Of course, it's supposed to be in the mid 60s by Monday, so we'll survive

Best thing I can say is that it IS better than freezing rain and it'll be gone by tomorrow- suppose to hit mid 60s by monday.

My point about global warming is that the planet goes through these warming and cooling phases without mankind having any influence. Those that keep crying that we are the cause of global warming are as ignorant of the history or the science involved as Chicken Little was about the sky falling. There is a lot of really stupid opinions based on ignorance of the facts but toted by many otherwise intelligent people. Global warming is caused by man and can be changed by man, or that the ozone holes are caused by chloroflourocarbons being used at the planets surface = The Chicken Little syndrom. I suggest we look to who is going to make money from convincing the ignorant to believe that stuff.
Howard Posted January 6, 2005 Posted January 6, 2005 I'm in agreement with Greg on this one. Thirty years ago the big concern was global cooling! Permafrost was creeping south at an alarming rate. They only gave us a few hundred years and we were going to have to figure out how to survive on a frozen rock. I've seen studies that charted temps back through recorded history, and these show average temps fluctuating on regular predictable cycles. We just had two days of record highs last week, but the week before that, there were two or three days in a row when the record high was set back in 1889. So for those who think it snowed all the time and was cold as hell back in the good old days, that may not be so. BTW....I've got 4 sheets of plywood on order and am getting samples of various epoxy products. The System 3 website has some interesting information on epoxy, paints, and varnishes. Gotta get that dinghy built before the ice caps melt! Howard

I got a System 3 kit over a year ago to play with and then set it aside and forgot about it. :roll: I have been using West Systems and know exactly what I am doing with it but want to also learn how to use System 3 and the Raka stuff too. Most of my work is done below optimal temperatures but above freezing.

capnrazz Posted January 6, 2005 Posted January 6, 2005 The science on global warming is solid. It is happening and we are major contributors to it over the last 200 years. It doesn't mean everything is going to get uniformly warmer on a local macro weather basis. The increase in atmospheric energy will result in more extreme weather patterns, both warm and cold. At the same time it was snowing on Charlie the east coast was setting high temp records for this time of year. We will also be facing more active hurricane seasons like the one we just had for the same reason. Do we really think we can dump billions of pounds of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere every year for centuries and not have an effect? Two major prehistoric extinctions, one was the pre-cambrian, I forget what the other was, were triggered by warming cycles caused by increased methane concentrations in the atmosphere. The methane came from living sources existing at the time. Both caused major climate catastrophies when the temperature rise hit about 5-7 degrees C. In one case ocean warming released huge quantities of frozen methane beneath the ocean floors which kicked the temperature up another 10 degrees and turned most of the planet into a desert. Wiped out 90% of all species existing at the time. The other catastrophe triggered a northern hemisphere ice age when fresh melt water from the polar regions stopped the gulf stream, wiping out 70% of all existing species. Gulf stream flow has diminished by about 20% over the last decade due to polar warming. At the current rates of accelerating warming we could hit the critical 5-7 degree range before the end of this century at the polar regions. The sad thing is that even if we had the political will to make the drastic changes to curb emissions, its probably already too late to reverse the current warming trend in time. But make no mistake about it, atmospheric changes are caused by the contributions of all living things to the biosphere. When serious imbalances occur for whatever reasons, major disasters will follow. Right now human activity is the major source of change in our biosphere. Razz

Just answer in a sentence (or 2) how mankind has caused the regular warming and cooling, from ice age and back and forth for the last 100,000 years or so? How did what we are doing now cause the ice sheets to start melting 15,000 years ago? Just facts and not your made up speculations and hypothosis which you believe to be true please. Frank, I swear I am trying to follow the rule , but Razz's sort of poor thinking and lack of real science and facts just gets me grumpy :twisted: . He is not alone. There are at least thousands who agree with him, just like there were thousands who believed the world was flat a few centuries ago and were ready to burn at the stake anyone who disagreed.

Thats just my opinion, as this is how things have a way of getting out of hand, and folks begin to judge each other by their political views, and agendas. This, in my opinionated opinion, Yes there is a lot of politics in global warming, on the side of the scarmongers, that we are all going to fry, unless we stop living our evil ways. When someone defines evil ways to me, you may be able to sell me that we are destroying the planet. Heck, the natural act, and human nature has been, for a long time, destroying the planet. More people, more needs for infrastructure, more needs for goodies, more, more, more....... ever since the-----------------------------------------fill in the blanks. Howabout the unregulated wooden stoves, and the unregulated open fires, cutting down the trees to create heat and warmth for the settlers of this and other lands, and the trees cut down to build our houses, and the trees cut down to make roads for us all..........Get the picture?? But where has this ever been discussed on here? Nope, its not for me to say. My only excuse is that I lose self control when I do not feel well....as I have not in several days now....not a real excuse in any case. I think it must be all this white crap falling on us here and the excessive methane levels from the chili with beans. :roll: Sorry folks :oops:

Beans is a side dish and don't belong in chili f'r cryin' out loud!!! If ya took a pot of Chili to Terlingua that had beans in it, they'd run you out of the place For those that don't know, Terlingua is the INTERNATIONAL Championship Chili cookoff. They DO have a separate cookoff for bean recipes. Oh - and by the way- If you don't think mankind is contributing to global warming, take a look at some of the recipes from there- MAN O MAN would THEY contribute
