tomstock Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 Ok, well I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for in this post...but I'm sort of stuck in the building process. I've lost momentum and am not moving in any direction. My current status is this: http://www.flopped.org/~mykrowyre/weekender/ I'm at the point where I need to finish with the Bondo topside, install the shelves, rudder eyes, and then flip the boat and glass. The problem is, I'm just not doing it. I read some sailing books last night to get me excited but to be honest I think the smallest thing is holding me up: The rudder eye bolts. I need to order these from the internet and I've been putting it off for fear of ordering the wrong size/length/eye hole size. I'm know, it's silly. If anyone can help here I'd appreciate it. I need to finish this boat so I can get sailing. Sigh. I'm starting to research vintage computer equipment... I know this is a bad bad sign. Some people collect trash when they feel lost or confused, others just hide indoors or even leave the country. My quirk is that I start collecting old computer junk from the 80s (Commodores mostly). I usually come back to earth in 6 months and sell all of it at a loss, but this time I figured I'd ask for help first. I need to put my money into the boat, not ebay shopping. Help! Tom Quote
Craig Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 We all go through this stage. When I built the Saralee I made sure that I spent at least 8 hours a week on her when I was home. You have the worst of it done now. Take a little break and then hit it again. Also, I live on a major residential road and the whole town watched me build this thing. No way I could not finish it! You have to have a local hardawre store that isn't a 'big box' retailer; at least I would pray they haven't forced them out of EVERYWHERE! :shock: Quote
Bill Paxton Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 Capt. Jake's got the right idea. Get down to the hardware store and buy a couple of eye bolts. Then take them home and try them on for size. If they aren't the right size, your friendly hardware guy will order them for you. Before you know it, you'll be wiping the foam from your face as you put the rail under and scream across your favorite bay. Here's the secret: just do something. Anything. Promise yourself you'll take one step. Then promise yourself to take the next step. Nobody builds a boat. You build a piece here, and a piece there, and pretty soon you've got a boat. Quote

Fintan Murphy Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 Tom, as others have said, we all have gone through this lull. What helps me is to clean out the workshop. There's nothing like a shiny clean workshop to make you want to mess it up with sawdust again And then, as Bill said, you do one little job, then another.... What I also promised myself was, when it stopped being fun, I stopped doing it. I have enought pressure and deadlines at work, this is supposed to be a hobby. After a couple of days/weeks, it looked like fun again. And anyway, it's not going anywhere, it will still be there when you get back to it. Just make sure it's protected from deterioration. Quote
Mark Hughes Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 I agree with Both Ray and Fintan. When I started bogging down here and there, I would clean up the carport I'm building in. With everything neat and clean and organized, it was relaxing to just go out and sit in my moaning chair and look at what I had done so far. And as I was looking it over, I would find myself saying "I'll just take care of this little part while I'm here". And one part led to another, and another... Then, as I crossed a certain point to go from "building" to "finishing", I set myself a target date. For me it happens to be my birthday- June 23rd. That keeps me going like gangbusters to get the details wrapped up and have it functional, if not completely pretty, by then. Something about grilling some steak and lobster, and sipping champaign from the cockpit of a boat I built from scratch rocking gently at anchor in some quiet little cove will make this a very special birthday indeed! 8) Quote
Jan Williamson Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 Tom, what you have is called creative procrastination, that's when one searches for ways to avoid the task. I have had it real bad at times. Cleaning the shop was a boost, and picking a small task just to get you started. I installed the shelves without the turned post (I will put the posts in later) just to speed up the process. Also I attached the remaining seat stringers without finishing the seats just to get things moving. I mainly wanted to get to a point to flip the boat and start glassing. I needed something big to start happening. I needed a confidence builder. Let me tell you, when you get to apply the first coats of primer and you see your boat looking more like the finished product, you'll get back into the frenzy. I also changed the launch date. It will be next spring. ( It was June 04) I need the pressure off so I could take the time to be more careful. I plan on sewing the sails, and making the blocks and deadeyes so I needed more time anyway. Your boat will look awesome, I can already tell Quote
adla Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 Same here...just stuck...I was going soooOo fast and sure I wanted to get it done before JUNE...and the steering halted me and then work...and now it is over 100 degrees everyday.
