John Stevens Posted May 18, 2004 Posted May 18, 2004 I'm getting ready to put together the mast support for the dinghy and I'm not sure about a few things. Where do I get bearing rings and pivot bearing? What do I use to attach them to the mast? Here is a rough picture of the setup. The mast is made to turn. Anyone ever come across anything like this? capt jake Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 For some reason, I can't see your picture. If it is small, how about turning some UHMW for the bearings?? Tuff, durable and nice stuff to work (Ultra High Molecular Weight, it's a plastic). Quote

Depending on the size, you could use some UHMW plastic for the bearings; you can cut it with regular wood working tools and it should hold up to a small mast. The same material might work for the pivot bearing on the bottom, depending on how the mast bottom looks (is it a hollow mast or solid?) Maybe someone will chime in. Its possible that you don't want it to turn too easily, and some hardwood along the lines of white oak, locust or rosewood would be in order. Quote
Bruce Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 John, try Skycraft surplus on Edgewater in O-do. Last time I was there I saw various size tubes of what appeared to be teflon or fiberglass. If you can find the right diameter you could probably slip the mast butt into one of the tubes and it would act as your bearing. Another flat piece could be cut for the bearing on the step. I'm headed out to a plastic mfg this morning and will check out the UHMW. I'm also headed to Skycraft Bruce. I was hoping someone had build Sabotina and could supply a picture of their setup.
