On my D4 I laminated the daggerboard and glued on the gunnels with Gorilla Glue. I used thickened epoxy (after one coat of unthickened epoxy) to glue up the centerboard on my CS17. I'm wondering what experience tells you guys about the pros and cons of each.

Theoretically both should work fine, but in practice do you find a difference with longevity?

There is probably some case where Gorilla Glue would be preferable to epoxy but I don't know what it would be on a wood boat. The stuff is very expensive, has short shelf life, foams on drying. is messy to use and is of questionable waterproofness. My own tests show it to have inferior gap filling strength. I do remember urethane glues similar to Gorilla being used for applications needing flexibility years ago.

Heck, even Titebond ll yellow wood glue sets up a good joint faster.

Maybe I'm missing something.

In my limited experience, I have found thickened epoxy to be much stronger than Gorrilla Glue. Also, when the foam spills over it is a mess to clean up and get a good finish.

I tried Gorilla glue in my woodshop. Maybe I didn't do things right, but after two jobs came back because the glue joint failed, I junked the stuff and went back to epoxy for repairing breaks. I don't of course use epoxy for standard gluing because on furniture the glue joins need to be reversable. I only use it on breaks other than joints.

I laminated a stem once with gorilla glue. It was as normal made too long and I used the offcuts to do some testing. Everytime I stressed the joints they failed at the glue line. I rebuilt the stem with epoxy.

It may be gap filling but that is not the same as saying that it structurally fills gaps! That's what I think.

Good luck,

Dave
