Jan Williamson Posted January 13, 2004 Posted January 13, 2004 Hi all!! Good to be back in the "moaning chair". I turned on the heater to the garage this morning. Might take a day or so to warm everything up. We got 2 ft of snow in 24 hours during the week between christmas and News Years. But the sun is out big time today, and the snow is almost melted, and I think spring is just around the corner (wishing anyway). I stopped production around Thanksgiving with the cabin seats. One side is mostly done except the back. I have to line the back with foam, and run the conduiit back there before closing up. I have the back section of one hull side to put on and I can do the other cabin seat. I found a real good filleting tool. It is a high temp spatula. It is curved equally on both sides. It is somewhat flexable so you can get into the corners. ken connors Posted January 13, 2004 Posted January 13, 2004 Jan, another good filleting tool is a computer cd. next time youre at home cheapo (if you go there), grab a handful of the free aol cds from them bin near the exit. theyll flex to almost any radius you might need, unless they get too cold. then they get a little brittle. disposable, too. Frank, looking around for help, but sees rotten teenage child just smiling at him offering no help at all: "Well, I saw it in the drawer. And I've been thinking ... well I would just ..." Wife: "You were going to use it on that boat, weren't you?" Frank, too quickly: "NO! Absolutely not! I need it for my car", and seeing that was also not a good idea, "I, uh, actually, I was thinking of getting you a set of them, because I know you are so fond of them, and I wasn't sure what they were called, so I was going to take them to the Gap and they could match it up ..." Wife: "Its a spatula. And the Gap doesn't sell them. Hand it over." Frank: "I'll be in the garage." Wife: "I know." Quote

One time he needed a 4" piece of dowel about the size of a broom handle. Guess where he got it. Sweeping slightly hunched for the next week got me a new broom. I bought the new spatula to replace the new filleting tool myself, and nobody missed it. Quote

I ordered my plans, however when I was building my last boat I was caught with my mothers coffee grinder and her sifter, not a good scene. i've since purchased a 50 lbs bag of wood flour. also just kinda saying Hi!!! as im new here and cant wait to get started building a weekender. Jack Gardiner Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 Frank, I built a HM-18 from Bateau that turned out to be a HM-19 as I was the first to build one it was actually 19 feet. I built her in 2002 during the summer heat wave, temps were in the 90's and 100+ she is S&G type of construction with a small cabin, I use it for local diving as I am a diver. you can take a look at her at http://www.members.cox.net/alex29 this boat hit the water 6 weeks after I recieved the plans. I am also currently restoring/converting a 34 ft silverton for dive charters to the local wrecks. since it will be -10 f here tonight that boat is on hold til spring as it would cost a mint to heat it!! presently I am building a PARADOX by Matt Layden, a 14 foot lug rigged sharpie coastal cruiser as I want to learn to sail, my hull went 3d last night. woo hoo!! since I have had more time to surf the web I found this site, and found the weekender page. As a kid I vaugly remember seeing the plans in pop mechs. I am hoping to intercept the mail the day the weekender plans arrive as My wife, mother, and sister have no idea I have yet another set of plans on the way. So if I suddenly dissapear you'll know why. Also my boat building experience comes from my childhood with my Dad and Grandfather repairing rotted out boats, pre epoxy days welp im starting to ramble. Jack Gardiner Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 Ok, heres my take on the harbor master 19. I picked the Hm for a few reasons. Fast building time, LIGHT!!! small motor!!! smaller trailer, less work to get it in the water and out to the dive site, I like that it will not sink, I like the flat bottom, less violent roll "this is VERY important to me while suiting and prepping to enter or exit the water, equipent is expensive and it takes me a while to heal" the way the chines are set up it turns fine and does not slam as bad as one would think. I really dont mind riding over the waves with some motion, but my knees are not what they used to be, this is not a major issue with this boat, having said that, I feel you need a 70-90 hp to make this boat "dance" I had mounted a 90 merc 1979 tower of power on it, in heavy confused seas we just hop skipped and jumped on thru it, with the 40 you must MUST pick and choose your way thru it, also a heavy following sea condition will spin you around and off the face of the wave, nice ride if your ready for it, great looking at the passengers face when they are not the 90 like most of that era leaks and is a pain to keep running well. I also like the self draining sole, this is good for diving as the water flows right off you and out the scuppers. The cabin and pilot house are a must for me, as diving year round in New England when its cold I need to be warm and dry when I need to be. The freeboard is high, but not so high to hinder a back flip or a flop off the gunnels. I mounted a T type folding dive ladder to the rear I walk up the ladder step into the motor well, thru the rear bulkhead and doff the gear. I have dove off the boat with 2 divers and once with 3, 3 was a bit tight, but with proper planning and management its doable. also we stow light gear in bags on the roof to grab some room. 3-4 more of these are being built by other builders, also they have released plans for a more of a deep vee hull of this boat. as far as im concerned there is no free lunch anywhere in boating, picking the right boat for the task greatly differs from one to another. For a boat that my toyota 4wd truck with a 4 cyl can tow around and haul out it fits me to a T. more smiles to the gallon !!! Jack Quote

Jack Gardiner Posted January 16, 2004 Posted January 16, 2004 Im in Waaaaaaaawik, right near the airport, north east of it closest ramp is Gaspee, but I put in at oakland beach when tide is low. I also use Allens harbor ramp. I work out of ScubaToo on post road NK, up the road from your harbor, wikferd. I have proof of 6 weeks, I actually ran out of funds in the middle of the boat project and did a roof to earn more epoxy 5 days not on boat work. I used west system and mostly fast cure hardener and worked very fast. wetting out the biax on the hull I used slow, no way fast would work on that. at that point there were no seats installed, no lights to start off, the cool windows we not installed yet. I'll be there on Satuday so I hope to squeeze in as many boats as possible. Do you know of any home-built boats at the show? My brother and I are doing a sailing course in the Anacortes area in June. I sold my home and moved to Mukilteo to be in a better area for me and for my daughter and her husband. I was looking for a shop to lease long term before I left and wasn't having much success. I may have to put up a new steel building to get what I want. Maybe we can get together while you are in this area. Perhaps when you head to Anacortes to your sailing school in June. Wooden Boat Foundation in Port Townsend has some great boats in their area and The Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle is a great place to visit. You could do that while you,re in Seattle for the Boat show. Don't know about private boats at this show. It is primarily dealers and related products. Haven't been to one in a long time. Cell phone rings. I answer with a wince and they say, my heat wont shut off, is this bad? i say, no its too dammed cold, leave it and it will eventually. this isnt good enough so i hop in the truck and head over and assure them that there is nothing wrong its just dammed cold out, i race back to the shed. I get things going and start ripping up some stock to laminate. I hear a soft, Jack?..... <loud sigh> yes?? are you expecting a package?? I bolt out of the shed and grab the fex ex box and mumble that its a boat building video and wave it at mom, whewf, quick thinking comes thru again, and i didnt have to lie. I open it, I see I need 3/4 inch Yes!!! I have stock!!! oooooo, another paragraph or so and the phone goes off, I SCREAM!!! I answer, they say, hey, our cieling is getting wet with hot hot water, why is this?? I say your pipe has burst, go shut off the boiler and turn the water feed off, im on my way. I am a broken man.
