Coaming materials and process

We’re starting to think about the final look of the boat and the coaming seems like it can be a central accent element. 
 

What types of wood have you used and what dimensions?

 

We’re thinking bright works would look nice… maybe sapele, walnut, or cedar.  
 

Suggestions and photos appreciated.

I used 6mm bs1088 Okoume as my deck was bs1088 Sapele. A couple minutes in boiling water made bending it into place easy. Clamped it in place and let it dry, then epoxied it in. I specifically ordered 2 sheets of Sapele for my deck and transom. I am a huge fan of Sapele. But kiln dried is very hard and even steamed does not bend easily. It could be laminated into place, tedious to do, but would look great.

I also used 6 mm okoume. Soaked overnight then clamped onto a simple mold for a day to prep for final installation. Sanded, final fit, then glued into place. Epoxied after.

I squared off the coaming and used 3/8" douglas fir that I ripped out of a long board.  I liked the look next to the darker epoxied ply decks.  Thelower part of the attached photo gives a flavor of it.  Straight across the front of the cockpit, then follow the curved sides back to the transom.
