thebob Posted October 7, 2003 Posted October 7, 2003 Hi guys. I just finished building a D5 from the free plans on www.bateau.com. For my next project I was about to buy the CK17 plans from the same source. I was worried about the seaworthyness of these boats. So I searched the forums and found a post that mentioned the CS17 as an example of the worthyness of these craft. Well now I`ve found B&B my only decision is which Core Sound to build. My only worries are the masts/spars. I will be building in the Philippines so it may be dificult to source Aluminum to the correct spec. How long are these masts? Can I laminate hollow tapered "birdsmouth" masts instead? Do the plans include sail plans? Hope to be persuaded soon, so I can buy the plans and CD. Cheers thebob. Quote
Brent Posted October 7, 2003 Posted October 7, 2003 The spars on my Core Sound 20 are right at 20 feet. I built mine using the 6061 T6 tubing specified in the plans. Others have built masts from flag poles and birdsmouth construction. I seem to recall that some birdsmouth wood spars had problems with to much bend. In the Philippines you probably have better access to quality hardwoods suitable for spars, but I would not be suprised to find the aluminum either. Quote
Designer Posted October 8, 2003 Posted October 8, 2003 The CS 17 spars are both 19' 9". The plans give the specs. for birdsmouth spars. There is no reason that wood spars can't be stiff enough or strong enough, but they will be a little heavier than aluminum. While in Papua New Guinea I built some fine spars from a wood called klinkii pine, and I noticed that the Phillipines had many of the same wood species. I am sure that with some research you can come up with some nice spars. On your second question, yes there are plans for the sails included n the design pack. Having spent some time in the far reaches - we have a good deal of empathy for the needs of builders off the beaten track...but remember, help is only and e-mail away. Quote

With sail plans the local upholsterer will be able to stich these up for me. He`s quite adept at unusual jobs. Although I'm based in Japan I have a small beach house in Cebu and get to spend almost half the year on the water. Excitedly waiting for my plans, wonder what my hull# will be. thebob. Quote
