capt jake Posted July 21, 2003 Author Posted July 21, 2003 Major construction and renovations under way! Started on the re-siding yesterday. It is in hte mid 80's and miserable to be doing such work, but it must be done. I am going to try and convince one of my kids to help me out tomorrow to continue with the siding, and other decorative trim. I hope this ends soon, as i am getting beat! I want to mow the lawn or sail or something other than hard manual labor (I get enough of that at work!). Quote

I have been trying to get my son, 17 1/2 to help out on my re-siding project too. There are several pieces of the cheep-(*!%(!@*@ siding that have come loose from the house. I thought they were just warped around the butt joints, but no, they are just about trash. So, I am going to put up hardy board lap siding. Just ordered an air compressor for the job. Should be here in a couple weeks. Anywhat... the son wants nothing to do with working on the siding... even offered him $300 to help! He has also destroyed my lawn mower, arggggh! Besides, I am a hard driving kind of builder! The fellow that has been working with me ($15/hr!!) goes until 'I' drop. He is a hard worker! but there is scads left to do in the next several weeks! Now we decided to take out the wooden deck and pour a concrete patio in it's place. My wife and daughter will start on that tomorrow while My son and I continue on the siding and decorative trim. Way too many improvements on the plate. You know, one thiing leads to another, which leads to another and another..... At least everything will be done right, on this go round! (I hope!!) :) I thank you for the offer.. do you paint?? Ha ha! That is coming soon also! I must pressure wash the shop for pain in the next 10 days (a friend is coming out from Jersey and insists on painting it)! All that will be left is the house! AARRGG, then we go into the flooring..!!! Can I PLEASE go back to building boats??? ?? Please!!!!! Oops, I just heard that I need to build a cradle for my new grand..... this winter. So far, the only 100's were in May (30th and 31st) But it is almost always in the mid to upper 90's. Occasionaly, the high drops down to the upper 80's. But the killer, to me, is that it doesn't drop but 20 degrees at night. So, if we get 98 high, it will probably only get down to 78. Most other places have a difference of about 30 degrees. We don't get down below 80 until 1 or 2am. We hit 80 again by 9am, 90 by 11, 95 by 2pm and it doesnt drop back down to 90 until 8pm. Just plain HOT! I don't think hosing you down would help... then youre hot and sticky. The humidity isn't too bad, most of the time. It is usually in the 50-65%... but when it pops up to 75-80%, yech! That is just miserable. It is quite unbearable from mid July to mid September, but the rest of the year it is usually Very Nice. Just takes a little time to get used to. We joke that we have a week of winter, no spring or fall, and two summers; regular summer and HOT summer. HOT summer is just about to start. Not too bad so far! Quote

It has been exceptionaly hot and dry this year, so we are not used to it (maybe just me!!). Tore out a 16x16 deck today, pressure washed the shop (in prep for paint), limbed some large doug fir to about 24'. Bought more lumber and plan on re-siding again tomorrow! Laura and I were in Austin on Sunday afternoon and commented on how much cooler it felt there with the lower humidity. At least the air conditioners are running again at the house Quote

I've been having a problem getting the nerve up to work on my boat again, I think I got the "itch". Further, I have way too many honey-do items.... Just ran two new electric circuits to the garage... It used to be one circuit: Freezer, Shop, Bathrooms (2), and outside sockets. Now the Freezer is on its own circuit, the shop is on a 30 amp circuit, and the rest has not changed. I just lost $500 worth of stuff in the freezer because it popped and noone realized it, for 3 days... euw! That won't happen now! Quote

I figure I am only about 1/8 completed with the siding, though it is going faster as we grasp the technique. I am gaining but need a break. Anyway, I wish I was on the water or building a boat! Interior of the house is nearly completely painted! (thanks wife!). floors are next on her list! take care!! :) BTW, the GRRR Animals came to me while breaking a sweat and thinking about Konrads new child and my soon to be grandchild. Then we had thunderstorms Form and the temp went down to 65 I went out to the lake tonite it was bright and sunny all the way out . When I got there and started to set up the boat I started to hear thunder and decied not to put her in. I am not that experienced in sailing to sail in the kind of winds that go with the storms. I also don't like the lightening that goes with these storms. Quote

I only have the gables and dormer windows to do. The rest is brick. So it should be a snap! Pat, a couple of years ago, I did a contract gig near Cleaveland for the summer. I remember going to see a movie on the 4th of July at a drive in theater (haven't seen one of those in years, so I thought it would be fun) I nearly froze my tush off..... BRRRRRRRR I am very glad that they driver had a bunch of blankets that he always kept in the trunk. I agree with you on sailing in the storms. I can't imagine it being very fun. Exciting -- yes, but not fun. However, when I gain enough skill, I will probably do some storm sailing, in preparation of sailing blue water. I figure that you can't out run storms, so you need some experience before you are out in the middle of the ocean. But that is a way in the distant future. Quote

After nearly a month of research, I have to take him to small claims court (for all the good that will do. :roll: ). I had one hard working guy here yesterday, today he never showed up! I have had two hard working fellows out here, but I can't keep them pinned down! fortunately, I pay them by the hour. General contractor should be here in a week to renovate the addition that was never installed properly to begin with (the major source of rot and leak damage we found). He seems pretty upstanding and I am looking forward to working with him. Roofers!!! One I am taking to court, the other who is highly recommended and I trust is so booked that he will not be able to roof the house until mid to late September. I guess the blue poly tarps stick around here for a while after all! I am glad we are going this route rather than building as we had planned!! I don't think the marriage would survive! Take care!! I have a fellow builder (Weekender) coming over to look at Fire Escape on Friday, so I get an hour break! :) Quote

capt jake Posted July 24, 2003 Author Posted July 24, 2003 Oyster, that is too nice of an offer, as you live on the opposite coast!! The siding is the thing that is number one on the list at present. Get that all done and then power spray the paint, I won't have to worry about masking teh roof as it will be replaceed anyway. The roof has 11 skylights, all of which need to be re-flashed the RIGHT way!! All of the step flashing is installed wrong also. capt jake Posted July 29, 2003 Author Posted July 29, 2003 Well, I figure we are about 1/3 of the way done with siding. I took a fall the other day at work and mucked up a wrist and a knee. The knee doesn't hurt any longer, though I have a lot of fluid build up in it. BUMMER! I worked on the house today, I need to go the Doc, though I also took tomorrow of to continue. Another bummer! Can't decide..... Wrist still hurts to beat the dickens. General constractor should be here soon to give me an idea when we will start and a final bid on all of our improvements (mind you, I am capable of doing all of this, i just don't have the time or educated help to do it in a timely manner). He should be done in about 5 days. Then I can continue with teh siding. A buddy from Jersey shou be here in a week or so, and he said he would paint teh shop for me. That is going to be a big help!! If only he could stay for a month, then he could paint the house. I hope to be done with my part of it by then. Then we get a new roof! Another added expense we hadn't counted on when moving in. Welcome to the Money pit!! Unlike a boat (A hole in the water you throw money in) Mine is a dry dusty hole in the Earth I throw money in! :) Later!! Quote
