Wes I am reading the Paul Brown essay in the Tempest book you gave me. Do you know what discapline he is from? The book doesn't say but he references a lot of anthropological literature that will be useful in my class. As far as the God debate, Kirkaguard said you can't reason your way to God. You choose to believe and act accordingly. He is the one who coined the term "Leap of Faith" but I don't know if he owned a boat. I am a practicing agnostic Zen Mormon and the reason i want a motor is if St. Peter didn't have the faith to walk with Jesus on the sea of Gallilee what chance do I stand in a Core Sound 20 without a motor?

My lack of experience in sailing is telling but I am going to put a small kicker on mine. Maybe when I get some experience I'll agree with Ray but right now I wish the boat came with the nautical equivalent of training wheels.

Wes I am not familiar with Measure for Measure so it sounds perfect. I occasionally teach an ethics and values class that would fit with this play. I would love to read your paper. Is there a particular edition with commentary that you recomend? The more I think about it I will be teaching a village and development class next spring which has a big chunk of colonialism and world systems theory. I think the tempest with the commentary would be perfect for that class. is there a good dvd of the play? It seems Ray is not a cultural relativist. some truths are beyond culture. Although one culture's pantywaist is another's pragmatist that can survive multiple environments Joel

Wes That was a fascinating read. I would have never related the tempest to colonialism. I have a couple of classes where I think I am going to use the Tempest and some of the readings from the book to teach about colonialism and power. Give me another good Shakespear read for a different play. Thanks Joel

Wes I read the play and the first article on the tempest as a possible commentary on colonialism. I am an Anthropologist and this type of debate is usually formed in terms of hegemony and anti-hegemony and relates closely to linguistics. Saussure started it his treatment of signifier and signified which led to Jakobsen and his theory of negotiated meaning. In this case meaning is not just what the speaker or writer intends but the meaning is negotiated by the listener or reader as well. This is the reason for so many interpretations of the Bible or in this case Shakespear. But the guy who I think brings a lot to this debate is Stuart Hall a post colonialist sociologist who was born in Jamaica. He took Jakobsen's work and said meaning is not just negotiated between a single speaker and listener but can be done at a societal level as well through it's media. He then took Gramsci's writings on hegemony and said that meaning can be interpreted in a mainstream/hegemonic way or in as anti-hegemonic or counter-cultually. The meaning would have been negotiated then by hearers just as it is now 400 years later. In this case the hegemonic interpretation at the time would have been the natural order of rightful leadership. But the anit hegemony was alive and well in the 16th century as well. The Las Casas - Supulvada controversies were being debated in Spain over the issue of weather the Indians possesed souls because if not they were natural slaves. The conclusion by most being that the Indians did posess souls but were inferior and so could not be slaves but could be exploited through the encomienda. And while this was going on in Spain the English were raiding Spanish possesions in the new world and the monarchies of Spain and England were linked by marraige. Even though it is obvious to me that Shakespeare was following the hegimonic line of thought, it is very posible that he was throwing little political barbs into the play to keep it interesting. And to keep this in context with a boat building forum.. the all built Core Sound 20's and lived happily ever after. Of course I could be full of it Joel

Wes I don't know if this is the correct forum, being a boat building forum and all, but I got my copy of the Tempest today. I haven't even gotten to the play yet and I already have questions. Oxfordian or Stratfordian? I tell my students in Anthropology that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I have only read those 3 or 4 pages at the start of the book but it seems like they need more evidence to support this claim. It seems more likely to me that De Vere was a patron to Will. I take students several times a year to Mexico to do humanitarian/research work. There are no bounds that I won't go to, to suck up to my "patrons" (rich donors) that sponsor the work. Including publishing articles in various media sources that flatter my patrons. It would seem natural to me that Will would do the same hence the relationship to De vere. Joel

I once mixed the wrong hardner and had to rework a very expensive carbon fiber mold. We used acetone or mek but i don't think either would be readily available for non industrial types. I like Tom's idea best Joel

In reality I've never considred buying used. Its the romance of building my own boat and sailing away in it. Where's Wes? I need a good Shakesperian quote here. "We are such stuff As dreams are made on; and our little life Is rounded with a sleep." Wasn't he shipwrecked in that one?

In my mind I was thinking like 15 or 20%. But when you are going to put that much time, effort and money on a project I would rather spend a little extra now than wish i had later on. On the other hand I must be nuts because there are a lot of sailboats for sale right now that would cost less than to build one. I think I'll make an appointment with my shrink. Joel

I was looking at the thread of Wes's build and Charlie was replying about the plywood cutouts and showed a copy of the planning sheets. Are those drawings done by hand or are they available in an electronic format that could be imported into autocad? I read a thread the other day (that I cant find) where people were extolling the virtues of cheap reliable painting equipment (including compressor). I am in the process of buying equipment and I would like a system that doesn't kill my budget. Also in order to sell this capital equipment purchase to the board of trustees/CEO and goddess of my universe I will have to be able to use it to paint the house this summer as well as the boat.
