I 2nd that motion Charlie...... A strong, good working tabernacle using a traditional round mast. I would be also be very pleased to see some ideas here.

What I have been trying to come up with is a way to rig an inner stay and storm jib when needed. Dousing the genoa is not a biggie for me. I don't mind the fordeck even in weather. I am build like an ape...low to the deck. I just have a way of folding up the headsail, tieing it tight with the sheets and then lashing it to a cleat I have up there. What I would love to do is to be able to is just clip and inner stay to the mast about as far up as I could reach from the deck....but that ain't going to happen with a main that is not run in a track. So...I am waiting for one of our inventors to come up with the final and best solution...then I will use that. In the meantime I will be trying a new lapper sized headsail and experiment with balance while sailing with a main or reefed main alone.

Well alrighty then. I have absolutley zero ambision to do any sort of organizing of any kind, even when it relates to only me...let alone other folks. ...so silly it is. I am not even sure why I want to put anything there. I am usually the only sailboat on the lake. It's not like I have a need to be identified and sorted from amongst the crowded lake littered with sailing vessels. It's an exciting day to actually find another sail off in the distance. I just find the main kind of like a blank canvas just waiting to be desicrated.....maybe I have the makings of a middle aged tag artist....

Is there an 'official' (jeez I hate that word) method of mainsail I.D for a Weekender? Such as WE 007....or SP 911? Are the proper numbers assigned as per plan number? If so, where do I find that number? I would like to sew some sort of ID on then main when I build the new one. I have something silly in mind, but I don't want to discount the idea of using something more .....usual. Thanks for any help....and sorry for not noticing any thread already pertaining to this topic.

Good question Mr. C From my way of thinking I want to maintain a smaller, yet efficient headsail and still sail well up. From what I have seen of any boat actually sailing with a half furled headsail is the sail shape is odd looking and the sheet angle is all out of wack. For me personally, what I like to do is the old fashioned thing...change sails to what is needed for the conditions. The layout and size of this boat prevents this. I had thought to rig some sort of inner stay...but so far I have not come up with a suitable(for me) solution. I am hoping that my boat will balance well enough with the new adjustable dagger board to possibly sail well to windward with just a main or reefed main alone. Time will tell.

Thanks for the ocular update. I hope you heal to the point of 'as good as it can get.' Just scored tickets for the Allman Brothers show down your way next September. Puallup Fair. I love those guys. I hope your furling system, once designed and tested, is a success. For my own self centered reasons. It could be the best of all worlds if a person can obtain a decent sail shape when reefed. Otherwise I will struggle with a slightly large headsail...reef the main...and if that ain't enough, turn around and sail downhill. I would love to also have a jib about the size of the original somehow...for those blustery days. I found even on the really heavy wind days, just the little jib alone was nice and relaxing and speedy enough for downhilling. Have fun.

Sounds Grand Mike. I wonder what it would take to make a roller device that would give you a decent reefed sail shape. I am re-rigging my boat right now and had concidered such a device so I could use a larger headsail...and be able to reduce to a jib size easily and from the cockpit....but I have not seen anything (so far) that does this. I guess this is why you have added the inner sail and the cutter layout

Funny, a bit of a parallel, with my core passion...music. One of the main reasons I ever became self employed and shop bound is the fact that I love to listen to music while I work. I have a nice system in the shop with a 6 cd changer and 100's of cdz. If ever you wanted to torture me...just make me work for eight or ten hours in a room with music playing on a system I can't control...or radio...I would rather be poor than be subjected that that hideously cruel slow form of death and mind control. I am just thenthitive I guess. Having said that, I love it that my wife likes the house quiet. We have a way nicer system in the house (keep trying to get it into the shop...no luck so far) but it rarely gets used. I also rarely listen to tunes in the car unless I am zipping around town...even though I have a kick butt stereo in my little car that makes your hair wiggle....on road trips I like to groove to the exhaust (the sound, not the smell). My mods are not radical...unlike Beakers. I am waiting to see what happens with Beakers tanker bow bulb. My main goal is to have woodwork of my own on a boat that someone else built (fat ego here), getting all my standing rigging a lot lighter appeals to me. And being able to actually sail to windward appeals to me as well. Ya ya, I know...all these guys boats are veritable thouroughbreds to windward. But mine just does not seem to have this magic option. So I am adding a nicer and larger headsail and a dagger board. How are you doing BP? Eyeballs all healed and googly?

Just about missed this post BP. Thanks for asking. Pathetic is about as close a word as I could think of right now. Although I did spend the evening designing a bizarre sail rig for a buddy's bizarre catamaran.....46 feet X 22 feet....too much fun. I have all the new spars made, not finished...having aluminum hounds made for bowsprit and mast...sizing up the tabernackle end of things right now.... I have a funky plan geared up there. Started the new companionway bits and pieces...at least the design is clear in my mind. Trying to use up various scraps of material around the shop. Dagger board case and board are made and varnushed. I have all my sail building materials. My problem is I have done woodworking since I was a kid, and for a living for 25 years...and it is REAL hard to get it up to do even more in my spare time (of which self employed folks have little). Plus, I just got a new mountain bike to keep my recumbent company and my wife has taken a shine to riding more lately...with the weather getting nicer and all....lots of excuses to not suck more dust. BUT, if I want to sail I gotta get a move on. I insured my sailing car today. (some folks call them tow cars) so I have to get inspired. I envy all you folks that have 'other' jobs and do woodworking for fun. I hear the joy and pleasure you all get from your time in your shops. I used to be that way too. I guess I do for a living what most folks do for a hobby. I have been thinking of taking up Accounting or Firefighting to keep me entertained in my spare time. Peace All

This would be pretty much impossible Mark. Your problem is not the coating over the applied veneer...the problem will be properly applying veneer to the surface required (now I'm sounding like Beaker....) Don't even think about that iron-on stuff or using contact cement. Veneer has to be glued to wood just as though it was a larger, more solid piece of wood...with wood glue. You need pressure, cauls, clamps and plattens etc. Veneer can applied to a curved surface with a technique called 'hammer-veneering'...chances are you are not going to want to go to the trouble. If you are...contact me off-forum. ...vacuum bagging is another method....

Oh, by the by. I also have a copy of Hoadly's book....must be 20 years old. I don't actually read it. It's just to impress the chicks...hick....time for bed.

OK OK....no, I don't use one. Never have. BECAUSE...I always let every piece of guitar wood get to EMC before using it to make an instrument. My shop is climate controled and remains within a certain tolerance year round. The Spruce for the mast is emc for our area(not my shop)...which is quite dry. Hard to say what moisture content it actually is. Ray, there are just some times when your books, calculators and fancy cypherin just don't add up......I got me a 13 1/2 lb mast. The good stuff. It remains to be seen whether this tiny light little Spruce noodle makes for a dandy mast for the mighty Tugboat Annie.

...actually, closer to 35lbs. Gee, I dunno Ken. I guess I am just lucky. It is a 1971 model I think. Quite old, but like many outboards, it has not seen a whole lot of use. I used it for a kicker when I was salmon fishing, my Dad bought it new and used it for the same thing. It is light and strong and runs like a top. 70 lbs! Wow.

Personally...I think 2 hp is way too small.I tried one and it was lame. I have a huge 6 horse on my WE and love it. Ya its big and a little heavy (30 lbs) but it does the trick very well. I can putter around in almost any conditions at hull speed (though I don't). It gets me to where the wind is, fast...it gets me home, fast...it gets me out of trouble, fast. I can decide to sail downwind all day...and motor home if the conditions are not favorable. I have towed other boats out of trouble...and to the wind. I am thinking of changing the name of my boat from Annie M (after my 100 year old Grandmother) to Tugboat Annie. I am going to do some beachcombing for extra gas money.... Oh....and last fall I was able to out run a nasty little storm coming down our lake. I was on the trailer helping other folks get out by the time it hit hard. I love my Johnson...both of them.
