Actually, Lisa and I first saw it featured over the weekend on a late-night TV show called "The Soup". We'd never seen it before, but basically on "The Soup" they just search out stuff on TV that others have said or done that's just stupid and worth laughing at. I know it's thread drift, but just to add to Phil's post: I use a turnbuckle on my steering line in the lazarette and have never had an issue on my Vaca. other than just tightening it.

You did mention the aspect of a "perpetual project", so to speak. I think just about any wooden boat would (or should) fall into that category. I know I've put in some serious man hours into my Vacationer in the last 2 months, and mine's 9 years old.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.. Answer 1: I have found that my Vacationer will not point with the plastic boats, but in winds up to about 13 mph, not a single one of them stands a chance downwind against an unballasted boat like a Stevenson boat. Bear in mind that any "racing" you'll find around here is pretty low key, and is done mostly to produce camp fire fodder. I went from racing beach cats to casually sailing the Vacationer, and it's (obviously) vastly different. Don't build a plywood boat for racing. Build it for the personal satisfaction and the guaranteed-every-time-you-take-it-out positive feedback from others. Answer 2: Perhaps, but I don't know what. Answer 3: The gaff rig looks like a million bucks, has a lower center of effort, and is just plain shippy. Ask the question to a dozen folks, and you'll get almost as many different answers. Each rig has its benefits. Answer 4: You need to take into account what your real goal is. What do you ultimately want your boat to do for you? Windward performance? Personal achievement/satisfaction? Economical way to get on the water? Easy first-time build? Sleep-aboard? Classic lines? You get the idea. One advantage with a Stevenson boat that you personally have is a small local group of us around you that have already built and launched. Most builders don't have that resource. There's also a Weekender up in Omaha, but you'll have to ask Mike what his name is. So that's somethng to consider. (I'm biased towards these boats, of course. But with a realistic understanding of what they were meant to be.) Mike, Arlen, and myself would love to have another pirate ship in our midst.

Late last year we put skis on some of our r/c airplanes and went out to the field and flew. Here's one of the best parts: This video has a CRASH in it. Here's the NEXT best part: The crash wasn't me or my plane, lol... ;D My flying buddy Tracy was doing high speed, low altitude inverted passes. (A great recipe for disaster ;D ) I don't appear in the vid until 1:42. I did most of the camera work, and all of the editing. It was my first attempt at video editing, so be nice.
