In building the Spindrift rudder I sandwiched one piece of 22 oz triax glass between two sanded pieces of 3/8 foam core to give me a nominal finished thickness of aprox.

Hey, that was easy! I should have thought of that. I guess I should order some hardware and finish the rudder. That way my hard points will be where their supposed to be. Thanks for the prompt come back.

Is it possible someone can give me the actual dimensions for mounting the rudder hardware to the transom? I need them in order to add some hard points in the foam material. This could be done after the glass work but would be better at this point in the construction. Anybody?

Let's assume the hull is upsidedown as pictured, you would be looking at a dent in the hull. The plywood gave a flat and symetrical surface. with slats on the inside of the hull matching the outside slats...when screwed together would tend to straighten out the dent against the plywood.

I was able to glass the outside of the hull this past weekend with the help of my two sons James and Jason , brother Russ and like a brother, Paul. I mixed the epoxy and the others spread it over the hull. I used 22 oz. Triaxial on the bottom of the hull to give me extra strength and thickness and 17 oz biaxial on the sides. I used exactly

In the photo above I have some plastic trim material I had leftover from a "honey do list". It works well in keeping the shape. Your CS 17 looks great!

I've thought about glassing the foam first but didn't know how ridgid it might become. Instead of taking a chance of ruining the foam(quite an expense) I tried the method according to plans. As for the dip in the hull I'll cut a piece of 1/4 ply length wise and will have slats about 8" on center inside and out. I'll wet out the glass and then apply peel ply and plastic so the ply won't stick-attach the slats in and out to pull the dip out. Hopefully this will be done this weekend. Ray's jig might have done some good here but I've never seen what it looks like.

I was getting ready to apply glass to the outside of the hull today but when I turned the boat over I noticed the two sides were not symmetrical in the area shown. Also, as I tried to install temporary jigs to fix the problem the center seam appeared to separate slightly in the area of the transom. ( I only applied one layer of 6 oz tape on the inside) So I applied two layers of glass tape to the outside today to alleviate the problem till I can get back on track.The weight toward the front is to help with a high spot. I have been a member of the forum for a short time and have learned quite a lot from all of you. I hope the support will continue as I finally am able to start my project. I have plans for the CS20 and the Spindrift 11N. Because there is no room in the garage at this time I decided to build the Spindrift 11N using foam and fiberglass construction. (composite) I've been interested in the different technologies other than wood for myself and possibly other perspective builders . I hear many different stories as to the pros and cons of both types of building

Thanks for the help guys.. I plan to buy the hardware and sails from B&B , but Raka is in my neighborhood which makes it convenient for glass and epoxy for the locals.

Is the 10 oz tape used for the seams in the CS20 a +45 -45 or 0 90 type? I'm told by local suppliers this(+45-45) is not available ...at least not in fine mesh.

On the plans for the Spindrift 11N there is a measurement of 5 1/2 " at the transom to level the boat...is this from the top of the transom as it is hand written and is unclear in my plans....Mike
