I have started cutting plywood this weekend!! I've got the cradle finished, bulkheads, transom and temporary center frame cut out. Now I have what will not be the last dumb question concerning the building of this boat. When laying out the bottom and side panels is it better to lay down three sheets of plywood end to end (24') and draw in the curves then stack and cut or is it OK to just draw off each individual section and stack and cut or does it matter at all? I ask because it seems that I remember a thread where somebody had trouble with some measurements not corresponding and recommended taping and glueing the panels before cutting.

I've got my rolling frame built and have the cradle supports cut out using the dimensions shown on the plans for the cs17 at the forward bulkhead, temporary center frame and aft bulkhead. My question is, should the centerline for each of these supports be mounted at the same elevation (level) or should there be some degree of offset between them?

Anybody ever use epoxy from US Composites down in West Palm Beach, Fl.? Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

Hello all, Finally after selling a boat, contemplating trying a sloop to cat ketch conversion on an existing hull, studying my set of plans for CS 17 #154 that I've had for over a year and reading this forum daily, I bit the bullet and ordered the plywood to begin what I hope turns into a nice sailing vessel. Is there anybody in proximity of Tuscaloosa, Alabama that is currently building or still has a CS 17 or 20? I've studied lots of pictures but would still like to see one up close. I've really enjoyed keeping up with this forum and I am sure that as I progress in this adventure, I will have plenty of questions for you guys. To all, Time permitting, I'll try to get some pictures of the boat up this week. I really appreciate your comments and help with this project. I could have just restored it back to the original sloop configuration but that would have been too easy! The adjustable mast step sounds interesting. Any links to examples that I can look at? Par, Thanks for the reply. I think you have the right boat in mind. I'm not sure about the boat being built in the 50's however they were built through the 60's into the early 70's. It is a fiberglass hull almost identical to the Oday Daysailor. It is 17' in length with a 6' beam and with a retractable centerboard. As you have suggeted, I have planned on installing a couple of bulkheads, new seating, decking etc.. Placement of the masts is my biggest concern. Obviously I would like to use the existing centerboard and trunk without modifing them however I'm not sure that I can and achieve balance. I've looked at rig placement on a couple of other 17' boat plans. It appears that the Main sail placement is the same within an inch, however the mizzen varies considerably. Both sets of plans use the same sail area Any books, video, internet sites that might shed some light concerning this aspect? Thanks

Hello all, I've been lurking around the forum for some time now but have never posted so here goes. I was given a very neglected Sailstar 17 hull. It's basically the same as an O'day daysailer. I like the hull but would like to convert it from a sloop rig to a cat-ketch like the cs17. What aspects of this conversion would be considered "must do"? All suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Johnny Turner
