Hi Jeff, wow crazy right!! I see that my pic has 618 likes on Woodenboat. Who would have thought! I think your FB page has picked up some extra followers aswell I do love making boats!!!! People keep telling me I should make them and sell them but I don't think it is quite that easy. But I fear I have the bug and it's not something I can stop and I can't store them all!

I made my stonefly half way through last year, coming up to Christmas I designed and made my kids a canoe. We had a paddle day today so I decided to outrig (I do not know the correct terminology) the kids canoe so I could take them out properly, as they are still too little just to set off without being in close proximity. I will put some pics up when I get a chance, the kids have a couple of outings in the canoe now and they LOVE it!! I have also convinced my husband for storage reasons it need to be hung on the lounge room wall. So he has to put up a few brackets so I can store it in the house.

So I was stuck on what to build next, so I decided to make a mini version of the Stonefly Canoe for my kids. I made the design up myself with inspiration from the smaller frames in the stonefly cut down and modified to suit my needs, along with a very similar shape to the bow and stern pieces. Everything was just winging it as I went along, I made the frames and then moved them around till I got a nice smooth shape. I had intended to do the gunwales 1/2" thick but I had to take that down to 5/16" to get the curve. It is approx 7'6" long. I made sure it has some rocker I think you call it along the length of the boat. Anyways I got to skin the boat today and get 3 coats of paint on, so hopefully by the weekend I will be able to get it on the water and let the kids have a turn. (In very shallow water within arms reach.) It looks like it will sit in the water ok, so I am really hoping that it will! Jeff, I hope it is ok that I took such inspiration from the Stonefly as it really is a good looking boat.

I would rate them in the order that you listed them: 1. Ease and speed of construction Weight of the boat. 2. Stability 3 Resistance/ ease of paddling 4. Speed potential.

My Firefly is done Took it out for a paddle today and love it. Excellent displacement in the water I was drifting through 2" of water and did not touch the sand. My only disappointment is that I am unable to get it up on to our 4WD by myself, so I won't be able to take it out whenever I like, I need hubby to help me. We will have to work out a roller system or something so that I will be able to. Here are a few pics of my finished boat that my daughter has named 'Yakity Yak'. Lisa.

P Douglass, I do believe I will be moving away from the SOF for my next boat but I will definitely be back making more. I love the skin on frame design. My next en devour is to make a Chesapeake 10' or 12' Wood duck hybrid. I really want to try my hand at the strip plank deck

Took the Kayak out for a test paddle the other day, even though it is not finished. Loved it, it is so much quicker and nicer to handle than the Stonefly Canoe I made I had a bit of fun with some colour on this one. Still have to work out my deck lines etc and do a few more things to it. Kids had fun with me pushing them around in the water that was only about a foot deep.

Well I finally got my boat skinned and I have been painting it with Marine Varnish, not entirely happy with the finish and surprised at how plastic it feels. But oh well, as long as it floats I will be happy The more coats I put on the better it looks, the below pics were after one coat. I have also been painting a friends kayak in between painting mine, he wants bright jigsaw peices, where the grey is will be lime green and where the white is around the cockpit will be blue We are hoping it will stay together as it was someones experiment and to our knowledge not been in the water. It is made of some kind of foam and then fiberglassed, weighing only about 25 pounds. Fingers crossed it holds together.

Looks good, a very good friend of mine who is 57, is insisting I paint his fiberglass kayak in a bright coloured jigsaw puzzle design! Never grow up

Took my 'baby' camping this weekend to a Dam, and went for my biggest paddle so far. Now I have gotten used to the boat and how it handles and getting in and out of it I love it and paddling with my greenland paddle is great, I must admit I was a little skeptical of these 'sticks' before using one. Lisa.

Jeff - just took them out, what if I just run a piece of ply along the middle 3 stringers/keel where my feet go?

Action Tiger - My daughter who is 7 is already hassling me to make her a kayak It is good incentive for her to learn become a stronger swimmer as she knows once she can swim the length of the pool I will consider it. Even though they wear a life jacket I think she needs to be a bit bigger yet. My next project will be a 10' Dinghy Pram with bent ribs etc out of Robert Morris' book, Building Skin On Frame Boats. That way both the kids can go in it at the same time, may even attach a little electric motor to it to scoot around.

My timber adjustable foot rest, copied the design out of a friends fiberglass kayak, the plywood just slips out and can be moved along to any of the slots. The coaming as of today, still lots and lots of hours of sanding to go. Woodman - Thanks for the pic helped me get my head around it Jeff - There is no flex at all in my coaming, but I have decided to put the supports in anyway. I had to make some new ones today as the the ones I had made, even though I cut them oversize were not tall enough to reach up to the coaming and there is no way I can bend it down to meet them
