This stuff works. I have a tailer with an extension with a queen sized bed. First time we used the trailer when it went down to freezing or a little below that bed was cold. I insulated under the mattress with a product that looks very much like the astrofoil. It makes a very noticeable difference. Ed

I think its a bad idea to completely close a compartment. I would install a small access port. If you put in a small hole eventually water will get in. Without an access port you will never _know_ what it is doing. With an access port you can see and no longer need or want that small hole. Just my opinion Ed Tomlinson

Scott, Its really looking good. On Sunday I search back thru the forum to see your complete build. Its been a long haul but the result looks to be worth the work. One small request. Can you get a picture with you standing next to the boat? Besides want to see your grin, I would like to get a sense of scale. Very nice. Have you used the seats yet? I built some using some old school seats. I am now working a seats mark II. For stability, I think you want to be sitting a low as possible in the boat... Another point. Do your seats remain in the boat if it rolls? I plan to fix it so my mark II seats will. Comments? Ed

Your site is nice - good balance of info. I like simple sites. Fancy ones just slow things down (even with a fast connection) and are quite prone to Murphy's influence. Ed

How long does it take the SH to chalk badly?

I would make the joint at the same place on both sides. I did not with by birder 2... Would have been better if I had - the shape would have been fairer as they would bend the same way on each side. Ed

Its a real good feeling when it actually floats - there have been lots of, half joking, comments about that. I did have one small problem. Not with the boat but with one of the seats I made. Part of one of the backs unglued along a fibreglass joint. No real problem I just have to make it a bit stronger... Guess thats why they call it a trail. Ed

My birder 2 hit the water for the first time this evening. It handles well. It was a little windy - the sailboats were not reefed though. There were 6 inch to 1 foot waves with no white caps. The boat is quite stable and easy to handle. I built a rack to carry the boat on the top of my suv. I wanted the inverted boat supported near the bulkheads. So I built a simple rack out of 1x6 cedar. It clips to the built on rack and straps are used to hold it centered. Seems to work well - time will tell. I got many favorable comments. It still needs some finishing. Everyone liked seeing the wood and encouraged me not to hide it under paint (and there _are_ imperfections) Ed [attachment over 4 years old deleted by admin]

One the epoxy sets I'll be ready to add a keel. Should I? The boat will be used by both one and two people. We are not experienced paddlers. Continuing on, if I add a keel should I make it to track the curve of the hull? My hull dips about 0.5' from the high points when upside down. If I follow the hull the the max keel height becomes 1.25' (from 0.75')? And what about a skeg. Good idea or not. Just how much tracking is a good idea? Comments welcome. You can never have too many clamps. As it stands now I have 24 of the beasts. This is just enough to do one inwail at a time (the second is setting now). I was able to close the gaps with wire stitches. It amazing how easily it came together using copper inplace of nylon. Tonight its place the blukheads and install the temporary brace. Ed

Just recieved four sheets of 5/32 okoume. All three plys look to be the same thickness. Next step is to rearrange the garage to have room to transfer the drawings to the wood and to cut the ply. I purchased from noah's as per suggestions here - they were a pleasure to deal with. Has anyone here used Miapoxy? - I can get it or West system epoxy locally. The Miapoxy is about 20% less expensive. <Grin> Ed

Scott, Do you have figures for how many sheets of plywood you have used? And an estimate of how much more you will need? TIa Ed

Nice shot - they look very pleased. The slow down is most probably due to people linking to this form via the B&B website which is still suffering from the pinelink.org conversion - http://www.bandbyachtdesigns.com is bringing up a pinelink page instead of the B&B page. Ed
