  1. I have installed the framing for the hatch and will put in the king plank next: Do the transverse members and king plank need to follow the arc of the forward bulkead and deck beam? It appears that the deck would be very flat otherwise. Thanks for any help, Will
  2. Hey David. My name is Will. Thanks for the update. I will check it out and am very glad to have found your blog....keep it coming. Yup...I will start over and do it the right way. The build has gone beatifully to this point....no sense in taking a risk with the placement of the pivot. Thanks again.
  3. Holy moly.... Just looked at your blog Dnjost... Provides excellent guide to fitting cb case.... Thank you.... Will be starting over with greater hope of success...won't tell how I attempted but probably walked 5 miles between boat and workbench....this stuff doesn't come easy for me.... Thanks again
  4. Agreed... Will rip the new posts, fit cb, and test clearance. Weighted cb and sealed case sounds interesting....how would you go about it? Look forward to the pictures Dnjost... I will be a while before messing with the case again...once bitten twice shy
  5. Thanks PAR.....initially thought you were referring to a guide to ensure level drilling....understood once I saw it.
  6. Thank you all very much for the helpful and prompt replies. I was not clear in the original post.....I have not epoxied the case in place yet and can take it out and adjust it. Don't know if this would change your recommendation Grahm for locating the pivot point. The measurements for the pivot hole appear to be from the bottom of the pre-cut ply.......I am guessing that I can just make the measurements from the bottom of the shaped case with a little donward adjustment on the height measurement? Will get the 90 degree angle attachment. I plan on glassing the inside of the case....just afraid of making some big mistake with dimensions that will interfere with subsequent steps. I will also double check the clearance of the CB, best I can tell I have about 2/16 clearance. Not sure I understand floating the shorter side above the bottom. Is it also possible to adjust the height (slightly) by adjusting the rails....that is making the rails flush with the seat tops even if they rise above the case sides by 1/8 inch or so? Also, if I am understanding.....the cap will also increase the height of the case by 1/4 inch? Thank you all again for the very helpful advice. Will
  7. Centerboard case has been a challenge. Have it in place but have several questions; 1. used 3/8 ply (do over and did not have more 1/4 ply)....is this a problem 2. top of case on 1 side is about 1/8 inch below seat tops...is this a problem 3. having hard time visualizing the cap....where does it go.....does it add height to the case? 4. did not mark pivot hole location before fitting the sides....how to find the correct placement for the pivot hole? 5. Should I just start over....and if so would someone share the most efficient way to go about it? Attached are a few pictures of the build and 2 of the case as it is now. Appreciate any help. Thank you. Will
  8. I will say that the 5:1 resin is much thicker making the use of a pump impossible. The measuring was difficult....at least the way I did it....as I first poured a pre measured amount into a cup X 5 and then 1pour of hardner. Getting the thick goo out of the cup each time was difficult and it made exact measurement very difficult. I would like to hear people's opinion about any benefit as far as strength/rigidity goes. This Resin/Hardner was advertised as being particularly strong and excellent for structural bonds etc., etc. Anyway, I am planning to go over current fillets with 2:1, as it goes on and cures much smoother in my experience. Thanks for advice on cooked epoxy....it is definitely cured and was almost immediately after it started to go off. Will grind it down and cover.......cant imagine being able to get it out of the bow without destroying the boat. Unless there is a clear reason to remove the wires, i plan to encapsulate them and forget it. Thanks again, Will
  9. Thank you for the suggestions. The wires are steel. The epoxy is from RAKA.....I used the 5:1 thinking that it would be stronger/stiffer. It worked great on all other areas of the boat....guess it was to quantity of the epoxy in that one place that caused it to cook. I will attempt to determine twist and hope for the best. Thanks again, Will
  10. Hello everyone, So far boat has seemed to come together pretty easy.....maybe a little too easy... Questions: 1) I let the epoxy cure fully before removing wires.....epoxy is 5:1 ratio....all but approximately 8 wires were removed with soldering gun and meditation. The 8 remaining wires are through the front bulkhead/hull and refuse to budge.....I nipped them off at the surface. Can I leave these wires in? Please say yes. 2) I am concerned about 'twist' as I did not level, plumb bob, or anything else I probably was supposed to do when putting in the front bulkhead/temporary support. How do I test for this and is it correctable at this point? Are you able to tell anything from the attached pictures? 3) The epoxy over approximately 12-15 inches of the centerline seam in the bow apparently kicked off/overreacted....generally behaved badly and resulted in a bubbling up with apparent porous consistency. Do I need to remove this section and if so....how? Picture of delinquent epoxy below. Thank you very much for any suggestions. Will
  11. Ok. Update with hope for reassurance. 1. side and bottom panels scarfed and cut out. Did not cut out panels together. Bottom panels are mirror images...whew! Side panels however are a different story. All stations on both panels are correct within 1-2 16ths and general shape appears consistent with plans for both. However, when placed on top of each other, the edges vary from 1/16 up to nearly 8/16. Panels were cut with mini circular saw (battery.....awesome tool) and brought to the lines with jack/block plane. The variance appears alternatively on both sides. BTW....I had to scarf an addition on one of the sides as the first one snapped in my hands near the middle joint when I attempted to rotate it (wood...not epoxy)....appeared secondary to excessive sanding with a &*^%)* orbital sander. Is this a big cause for concern.....does this require redoing a side panel before attaching to bottoms? 2. Transom and aft bulkhead also cut out. Enjoying build very much at this point. Scarfs were definitely a learning experience, but satisfying....mostly. Thank you. Will be attaching panels this weekend hopefully and whatever else I can think to do. Any recommendations, comments, etc. are very much appreciated. Will
  12. Yeah, I have read Wes' detailed account multiple times and have it downloaded in a separate document for quick reference. Its funny though, now that I am starting to build.....I often cant put 2 thoughts together and just want to move forward. Trying hard to slow down and think things through, but not easy. Thanks much for the tool tips. Will
  13. Thanks much for the replies and encouragement. Scarfed the side panels today will hopefully get to bottoms and forefoot tomorrow. Definitely a learning process and very glad for this forum. Glad you mentioned glassing both sides simultaneously... Was going to go the long way but will attempt it. Thanks again for the support. Talk soon. Btw how do you attach pictures?
  14. Will do...thanks to all for the responses....I apologize in advance for simple questions...
  15. Thanks PAR...will look into butt joint. With any joint wont it result in a "lip"/uneven area on one side? Is this a problem?
  16. Thanks. Yes was referring to scarfing the bottom panel (3/8) to the front panel (1/4). Seems that there will be a "lip"/uneven area. Thanks for advice on fiberglass cloth...will get tape.
  17. Hello. Just starting...had plans for 1 year. Have attempted to search forum for answers without success. 1. How to scarf different thicknesses of ply? 2. Bought fiberglass cloth that is 12 inches wide. Any problem with cutting this to get the 3 inch width called for taping the seams? Thanks. Have loved reading the posts. Appreciate any help. Will
