  1. Does anyone know a good source of Marine plywood near Chicago that won't cost over $200 to ship. I decided to build a catspaw 9 as a warm up to building the CS-17, have plans for both and I am starting to gather materials. On another note my catspaw plans show the rigging layout for a boom. I plan on using the sprit rig, anyone have ideas on how to rig the sheets etc. Thanks, George
  2. Sorry, I have been gone for awhile, working my butt off, got fired, then rehired, long story, and toyed with the idea of buying a boat, but I keep coming back to the CS-17 sailplan. So I am skipping the morning starbucks, and scraping money together to start building this spring. My question is has anyone put vertical reefing on their CS-17. I really like the idea of luff sails, instead of lacing or putting sailtrack on. but I will be doing some lake michigan sailing, and would like to be able to reef vice moving the masts as I will be sailing alone most of the time. I think vertical instead of slab reefing would give me the best of both and I wouldn't have to wrap the sail around the mast.
  3. Way to go Roger, I too have been singing the winter blues. But the sun comes up earlier and seems t obe going down later. I have the cash to order my Masts next month, and if I get my bonus in April Okume and sails are not far behind. Keep us posted, I hope to start building in April.
  4. Greg, What I miss the most is being able to sail pretty much year round. And the Marina I sailed out of there. I was out every weekend, and since the Marine Corps ran the marina I could rent for way less than owning. Now I am retired from the Marine Corps, but still have to work, and between work, the weather, and no boat I only got out twice last season. Thus the reason for building my own boat. I could buy, but this way when I am done the boat will be paid for, and the CS-17 offers no compromises in meeting my sailing needs. Every commercial boat had trade-offs. I wish I could take 3 months off to do the build. I love being back in Chicago and the midwest, but I wish the season was a little longer.
  5. Alas, I am a sailing orphan. My Wife who tolerates my obsession with sailing and boats has no interest in either. My daughter has even less than my wife. So I am stuck going to this great boat show alone. Thought of asking my brother-in-law but not sure his company is worth a $12.00 ticket. I am wondering if anyone else from the forum is going and might want some company.
  6. The picture is from a sail I did on San Diego bay. Now I am a Chicago Great Lakes sailor and hoping to start CS-17 Hull # 93 this spring if I get my bonus. My daughter wants to attend Loyola University, so money for outside projects is tight. :?
  7. I recently ordered from the Rockler Company. Now I will have to get back in my catalog to reconsider a drawknife. They have nice products and great service, they have a mechanical caprenter's pencil on sale right now that is awesome. Has anybody created a pattern for shaping the centerboard. I hope to start mine soon, but wonder about getting the foil shape right.

  9. I can't find any knot free 2 X lumber here in Chicago. I was wondering if I couuld glue up 1x which I can find to get the right dimensions. Figured I can build the centerboard over the winter since I live in an apartment and start the hull in the spring.
  10. Go to http://blumhorst.com/potterpages/ Dr Judy describes how she did the same to her Potter 19 Red Wing. If you can't get to her site, go to trailersailor.com and leave a message for her in the Potter forum. Good Luck, Geo in Chicago
  11. I am a sucker for a Red Hull! Great Job!
  12. Thanks for everyone's advice. Okume it is for my cs17. I still have to figure out where to build, but I am working on it. I am also rethinking the painted deck, may I will go bright. Geo
  13. The CS 17. I just couldn't resist it fits my needs really well. Although I may have to change my Email from Spinnaker55 to Cat-ketch55
  14. My first boat building error my Hull number will be 93 not 98. I am sure it is not my last. Is there any advantage to building with Luan over Okume. I plan to keep my brightwork limited, for maintenance sake, and I hate to cover beautiful wood if there is another alternative. George in Chicago
  15. Tonight, after three years of sitting on the fence I ordered my plans for the CS-17. Owning my own boat has been a dream since I learned to sail. I have never built a boat before, but house building, and rehabbing, have given me above average woodworking skills. I learned a little about fiberglass and epoxy from repairing my Lido. Now I am in Chicago, have a new job, and a new life, and I think the CS-17 will fill my boat requirements nicely. My goal is to be ready to launch by April 2004. I will come here often for advice and encouragement. Wish me luck. :? :?
