Tintable coatings for Polyester

So what is the final goal of the coating?  Should the weave of the fabric disapear into the paint (like when doing fiber-glass)?  Or should the weave still be a little visible and just coat until I get an even, glossy sheen?  Painting with oil based Rustoleum.

Paint is a 'thin film' coating. It is not like epoxy, it is meant to be applied thin.

 

I have always said 3 coats is enough but I have learned that some people don't put on paint as heavy as others so that can vary. 3 coats on the old 8 oz works for me. Some people put it on thinner and need more.

Thanks Jeff, I understand about it being a thin film coating.  I am trying to understand how you know if you have enough paint on their or not.

When it doesn't leak, you're done! 

 

You could sit it on a sawhorses and put a LITTLE water in it and see if it seeps.  A gallon or two, no more.

You can turn it upside down on the horses and stick you head inside the coaming and look close at the skin. If you see little point of light, pin holes, you are not done.

 

Seams are the hardest points to seal and almost always seep a little bit.
