BrianM83 Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 I am about to install the keel on my Spindrift 10N but a bit confused. The plans say to use screws from the inside of the hull to hold it in place. Are these permanent or temporary screws? If permanent can I screw directly into the keel or should I embed them in an epoxy plug? Thanks in advance. Quote
Hirilonde Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 They can be either temporary or permanant. Since you are bedding/gluing the keel on with epoxy the screws become uneccessary other than to secure the keel like a clamp while the epoxy cures. I removed mine and filled the holes. Quote

I used White Oak for the keel, screwing them directly into the wood, which was bedded into thickened epoxy. I think the screws are there because it sure would be tough to clamp. I figure I will just remove the keel screws but I am thinking ahead to the breasthook and transom knee screws. The plan calls for brass screws. Should I fair over them or leave the head exposed? I don't see a need to ever remove the screws in the future but I would think fairing over them with epoxy could cause cracking in the future. Any thoughts? Quote
Steve W Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I used flat heads and countersunk them just a bit deep, carefully checking the depth so the flat heads sat just a hair below. I faired over the holes with thickened epoxy. I will take this time to laugh, because you are reminding me about how much overthinking I did! I hope you are taking good pictures. I took a lot, but I wish I took more.
