It looks like Meranti, which many lumber yards, even some good ones are selling as a Mahogany. It is very popular as decking and porch flooring. If so, then it is not really a true mahogany. This does not mean it is not a good choice, actually I use it for some applications on boats. It is beautiful and very reasonable in price compared to true Mahoganies. The name mahogany is one of the most misused names in the lumber industry. Because it is so well recognized and because in the eyes of many it implies quality, it is used as a marketing name even when it is not really proper to do so. The material is sold as mahogany but even in a single bunk you can finds boards of widely different color grain and density. For the rails I picked very dense and slightly darker in color planks. The big joke at CABBS is that luan at home depot is really Philippine Mahogany. Jim Quote
