Joe Antin Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I am building the rudder assembly on the CS17. The pintles are designed to bracket cheeks that are about 1 inch thick. The thickness of the rudder cheeks is 1 13/16. i presume i need to mortise the rudder cheeks to fit. before i start cutting i am looking for some confirmation. thanks Joe Quote

hokeyhydro Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Well, if they don't fit, make them fit. I would not cut, chisel, or otherwise rebate the cheek blocks, that would weaken the structure, so just suck it up and bend them to fit. That's what I did with mine - worked out just fine and dandy. I didn't want to use a sacrifial block and beat them with a hammer, was worried that would damage the finish. But using a hammer and big pliers then lightly beating onto bolt and screwing down seemed to work. Quote

For my daughter's catamaran I could have dropped 60+ dollars on ones that fit the fat cheek blocks, but they are massive designed for big boat stuff and wouldn't fit on the itty-bitty transom of the cat hulls - and the there was the $$$ X2 for two cat hulls. I figure I got a 6" bench vise and a BFH (Big Freaking Hammer) so I bent the standard small boat parts. Pad the vise jaws with ply scraps. And tape the stainless to save it from scratches. AFter the ears are spread and you go to bend them to wrap around the cheek block, don't bend over a sharp edge. I filed a little round off on the vise beater pad. Don't forget to add a toggle stop block above the lower pintle to keep the rudder assembly from floating up and out. Quote
