capt jake Posted April 9, 2003 Posted April 9, 2003 FWIW, I installed the mast again!!! Stepped it 2-3 times. What a difference when all of the rigging is attached!!! ;( Only dropped it 2 times. I have all of the hardware in place and only have a wee bit of line to buy for the mainsheet. Oh, and one more turning block to use as a cheek block for the jib. i have to finalize all of the sail fitting when the sails arrive. Thnaks to some good advice from the coast, I covered it up just in time. It is starting to rain, whew! :) I have learned a lot in this mere half day of runing rigging; I will spell some of it out at a time when I won't get wet while taking photos. One thing is,Ii will rig the jib halyard to assist in the stepping of the mast. This will be an easy conversion with no extra hardware. I almost took a picture of my clear Mylar sails, but I ran out of time. They are truly 'clear'. :) Quote

Please keep us posted about your mast raising system using the jib halyard. It's a great idea to use an existing line. There are plenty on there already! Quote

Tyler, Just a word of caution, as many pointed out to me and have mentioned during their building process. Get as much interior stuff done as posible before you place the hull sides (epoxy, primer, paint, etc.) as many spots are difficult, awkward or impossible to get to once thats done. Otherwise, good progress and keep the pics going! Quote

I just finished putting a coat on both sides of the forward bulkhead, the underside of the deck below the fore hatch (well I haven't cut that yet...) and the transome front , bottom area back there, the underside of the deck back there, and the back side of the lazarette (which hasn't been attached, but I masked where it was attached so the glue whill adhear to it well). I used tan latex exterior paint for my garage door. I'd like to get the sides on this weekend, is there anything else anyone would advise doing first? Quote

I have an extra long jib halyard; my though was to take the standing end ( the one with the shackle to attach to the sail) and run it down to the forward eyebolt and secure it. Keep the halyard running through the block. Take the bitter and and run it down to the forward eyebolt also; then either feed it through the eye or through a block attached to the eye and back to where you are standing to step the mast. As you begin to raise the mast, there is a point where you can let go of the mast and continue pulling it up with the halyard. This should give a 2-1 advantage. Quote

(eyebolts, pulleys attached, etc.). Just a thought. Are you caulking any joints? Quote
tdrown Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 Derek, thats what I was thinking about, adding the steering things and maybe cutting the access hole before the sides or the seats go up may be a wise move. I just attached the lazarette itself tonight. I already painted back there and may give it another coat now that the lazarate is on. Yes, I have caulked some of the joints, I would like to caulk all of them (but I am out of caulk and low on money, I am going to fix leaks and things in my 2nd car hopefully and put it in the paper next week, that should be good for at least a few hundred dollars, hopefully $1,100). Anyway, the rear joints are all caulked, but the side stringers are not. Right now (except for this computer break) I am filling things. Thanks for the helpful imput! Sorry Capt. capt jake Posted April 12, 2003 Author Posted April 12, 2003 Well, I got my main sheet today. 3/8" NE sta-set in a color coordinated green! Got the eye splice in it in no time (3/8" is so much easier than 1/4"). I just hope it functions well with the ratchet block that I have; it seems a bit too large, but maybe with time and tension it will be ok. I have the track installed for the loose footed main, bridle is done, need to go to the sign shop to get the graphics done, need to register for the upcoming show (oops, I need a truck for that! another to do!!) !! Yanked out the chop saw and dust systems today! tommorow is the compressor and some other hidden 'treasures'! :D Might have to call a local boat builder to see if he needs some more stock! He he!! Look forward to seeing it at the show![/quote'] Strangley, the ropes which pull the sails into the boat are called "sheets." So the mainsail rope is the main sheet, and the jib rope is the jib sheet. capt jake Posted April 16, 2003 Author Posted April 16, 2003 I will pick up the graphics for the name on Thursday. Two tone gold and green lettering including port ofd call only cost me $33! If the weather holds I should be able to finish up all of the final details that day (aside from sails). This way I should be ready for the show! I have to clean all of the dust off the kayak as well, as it will be in the show also. Then I will have to start packing and I've gotta find a truck, REALLY soon!! :) Quote
