Scott Dunsworth Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 I am going to pull my board out for a little preventive maintenance. I checked all of the block system last summer and it all looked like the day I installed it. But on the tip of the board where I have used it as a depth sounder is getting a bit rough. So I thought I would pull it and reglass and add some new rope to the edge. My only concern is I used graphite in the epoxy. So do I have to sand down to the clear epoxy to make the repair or can new graphite epoxy be applied over a sanded graphite finish? Scott Quote
hokeyhydro Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 When I do a graphite mix it is a couple small scoops of graphite powder in a mess of resin, so the "graphite" is mostly epoxy. I have never had a problem adding epoxy coats etc to a previous graphite/epoxy coat. Sand it, glass it, make it black & graphite slick - done. Quote

I made some repairs to my rudder blade recently and new graphite-epoxy stuck to the old graphite-epoxy just fine. Quote
Scott Dunsworth Posted February 1, 2011 Author Report Posted February 1, 2011 Thanks, I have not used graphite to much and wasnt sure. Quote
Kyle H. Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 Hi Scott ~ Do you plan on using graphite powder on the centerboard plus on the insides of the centerboard trunk? I would be curious to know the quantity of graphite powder you use since I have not ordered any yet. Thanks!! Kyle #44 Quote
hokeyhydro Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 Graphite powder: WEST sez add graphite 10% by volume to the epoxy mix. Or 1 1/2 tablespoons per 8 oz of mix - 8 oz is 10 strokes of the standard WEST resin pump. Of course you can bump up the powder/epoxy ratio but I after a couple experiments I decided WEST is right on the ratio. Bottom line: I have a 6 oz can of graphite powder, have coated numerous square footage of stuff, and have plenty of graphite powder left. I think the 6 0z can is the smallest quantity available, more than enough for a centerboard and trunk interior. Quote
