Diddle Dally Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I'm considering purchasing an Oday22 that needs restoring. What would I be getting myself into? What problem areas do I need too look for. Everything is there i.e. Masts sails hardware etc. But are there problem areas I need to look out for? It mainly needs paint (how hard would this be?) I know this isn't a B&B boat but I'm sure some of you have done this before, so I'll pick your brains!! Thanks! Quote
PAR Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I'll assume this is an early 70's vintage boat. There are some reinforcement areas between the hull shell and the liner and deck cap. These are usually plywood pieces 'glassed in as local reinforcement. Under sail tracks, chain plates, the whole of the transom, under seats, etc. These often have rot in them. Hardware of this era will be the stamped steel, probably Schaefer Marine stuff and junk. They may look good, but the sheaves will have died long ago, being chipped, cracked and brittle from UV damage. Painting a 'glass boat isn't hard, but boats from this era will not be especially fair. You may want to take a longboard to the hull, to fill and fair her up. If not just scuff the hull surface with 100 grit first, then progressively up until 320 (maximum), apply primer (block it down if you want) then topcoats. I'd strongly recommend a single part polyurethane if you're a novice painter. Roll and tipping will offer great results and the resulting finish will be hard, durable and long lived. Quote
bruegf Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Based on my experience with my O'Day 28, I'd say the most likely thing you're likely to run into is wet and/or rotted wood core in the decks, cabin top, or cockpit sole. A royal pain to fix, very time consuming but not really all that difficult. Go over it with a moisture meter and you're likely to get a pretty good idea of what you'll need to deal with. The other weak point in my O'Day was an excess of gel coat cracks. Those were cosmetic, but would very difficult to deal with if you want to eliminate them because of looks. Fred Quote
