My boat if basically finished but I still have to rig it.  I travel to Phuket, Thailand next week to purchase my sails from Rolly Tasker.  $602 US for the main and mizzen.

The search for an alternative to my wooden masts has proven pointless.  I give up and will be using what I have.  I think they weigh about 15 kilos each.  Can anybody tell me how this is going to effect the stability of my boat? ???

Hi

I'll give you an educated guess.

If you're not racing I don't think you'll notice the difference.

I'm not sure as to the exact specifications of the CS20 rig (I'm building a Cs17) but based on a rough calculation the standard masts would be about 10 kg- not a huge difference but in relative terms 50%

In terms of righting moment this would approximately equate to another 15 kg on the rail in a serious heeling situation. Clearly crew weight is significant- a  small child would make up the difference.

The form stability of the coresounds is naturally high.

I say don't worry about it and go sailing.

Cheers

Are they solid or birdsmouth?  If solid you can make a substantial savings there.  You could also make one with a lighter wall if you already have birdsmouth mast and use a fiberglass sock over all to stiffen it up.  You might talk to the folks at bateau.com regarding the scantilings for the mast.

Thanks guys.  I will take your advice and just go sailing.  We'll see what happens once I get on the water.

I am traveling to Phuket, Thailand soon to buy my sails.  Rolly-Tasker has their main loft there and quoted me $602 US for main and mizzen.

I'm close now and getting excited at the prospect of actually using the boat as compared to working on it. :o  What a concept!
