How are you finishing the cabin lid edge?

Just curious what others are doing with the plywood edge for the cabin lid.

I originally used hot-glue edging that you can get at the box stores, but it was easy to catch it and pull it off with your foot.

And that stuff isn't entirely meant for outdoor applications anyway.

Just today I pulled all that stuff off and ran a 3/8" roundover bit in my router around the cabin lid..

So now it's a rounded edge.

But it's still an edge of plywood.  Now it's just rounded over.

Opinions and suggestions welcome.

Minimum 3/8" round over, epoxy and glass.  That is the only way it will hold up, IMHO.

Plywood edges are tough ... end grain wood that is in thin layers so it really wicks in the moisture, leading to delamination.

Are there alternatives to epoxy and glass for outdoor use?  Exterior paint will work for a while, I guess.  Maybe someone else has an idea ... the top of the cabin doesn't have to be glassed except for this kind of thing (unless you plan to sail it upside down).

A neighbor of mine used some kind or polyurethane caulk over the end grain on his dog hauler doors.  It looked like a perfectly smooth glass finish, and by the end of the winter it was still like new.  I can't vouch for its longevity, but it sure got me to thinking about it in a lot of my outdoor applications where I need to keep water out of end grain.

Well I'm committed now.  I went and bought a yard of glass cloth.  :

This will be a project for next Saturday morning, as my time to work on the boat is limited during the week because of the two squids who are, right now as I type this, destroying something in the other room...  >

It's ok.  I need the cloth for one or two other small spots where I ran out of glass 9 years ago, and eventually it checked.
