New outboard! well, kinda

I got a 1960's Johnson 3 hp for my CS 17. It runs too:-) Can't wait to go motoring!

Luckily this will hardly interrupt my rowing workouts since a motor this old is bound to die soon. Then I will just throw it in the bilge (right next to those oars) and I will have all the ballast I need for sailing. :-)

And I can get rid of the anchor, but I will reuse the rode. The chain will shackle to the handle on the front of the motor nicely.

Why did I by this old motor? I don't know but I drive a '68 MG Midget 35 miles to work and back every day so maybe there is a corralation? Either I really like stuff from when I was younger or I have suffered brain damage from the ride in the midget :-)

I can relate to your madness. I got the same engine, 1966, fold up twin, in perfect condition. Why did I buy it? Goes with the rest of me, something different. If the engine is in good condition, its more than just an engine, its a conversation piece for other mentally challenged folks. :wink:

If you were looking for an outboard for your boat what would YOU choose? And remember we have a budget of $200.

For $200 you could attach a sack full of rubber bands to a prop or look for an old motor. Hmmmmm.

I have a photo here to show you, but blowed if I know how you blokes do it. :oops: A bit of the hands across the water wouldn't go astray here.

If I follow your analogy correctly, I am at the point where I have about seventeen pots to pee in and only one cup of coffee :-) So the pots will have to take what they can get :-P

p.s. Just want to be clear that my Johnson is in fact NOT a urinal, although it is the same color as one. I am just being allagorical here

smacrae, when you post a reply, there's a box below the message box that says "Add an Attachment" with a "Browse..." button. click on the that Browse button to find the picture on your disk, select it, and then click on the "Add Attachment" button that is in that section also.

The pics have to be under a certain size, so its best to use a program like the free EZ-Thumbs from http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/ and reduce the picture size to 400 x 300 pixels before trying to upload.

Hey! Look at that! I did it! You little beauty!! Thank you Frank. I just knew that between the two of us we could get a picture up! :shock:

There will no doubt be some rather pedantic types who will mention the sordid subject of money, namely $200. However, as I stole it from my son :twisted: it has cost me nothing (apart from 17 years of blood, tears toil and sweat) coming well within the afore mentioned financial parameters.

Discerning observers will notice that while there is actually no boat in front the purloined putt-putt, the jaws of the clamp are set to the exact width of the transome of a CS17. Watch this space!

One thing though - isn't everyone who chooses to go down to the sea in ships being allegorical?

Unfortunately my daughter knows Thai Kwon Do, and has two sisters and a brother. I have found it safer to stay on their good side :-) Besides, It's cheaper to feed them while they row then pay for gas in the outboard, and the conversations alot better ;-)

That is the outboard most of us would buy if we had the money. But even if I had the money I probably wouldn't. Remember I drive an MG, not a Honda :-) The fact is that my ramblings through the islands and off shore have proved to me that I don't NEED an outboard, I just want one. I would like to sometimes catch the second tide of the day when I'm running late so I can get more sailing in.

For anyone else relegated to dated outboards like me (1963 for my johnson) I just found out that NAPA has parts for these.
