Mystery block

This block and cam cleat assembly is for the main sheet on my Laguna Balboa 24. I would like to replace it if I can, and I already have another block that along with some destruction of the old assembly, I can cobble together a suitable solution.....maybe.

Can someone tell me who made this beast and/or were to buy a new one?

I had some old Schaefer blocks that looked a lot like that for 3/8" main sheet, mounted on the cockpit sole. You can still get all the misc. pieces from many of the mfg. Harken has odd combinations that would replace it as does Schaefer. RWO has some smaller combinations that might give you ideas.

That looks to be a Schaefer Marine part, tough my current catalog don't show the exact one.

Basically it's made up of different parts also offered by the block manufactures. The bent piece that hold the cam cleat and has the spring/swivel bottom is called a "cam base". The block is a single with becket, the cam base is made from a "stand up" base, with a bracket to hold the cleat installed, the cam cleat and a eye strap.

I make these up a couple of times a year and they are pretty simple. An example would be a Ronstan series 40 block with becket (RF40110) installed on a stand up base (RF2450) with a (RF5010) cam cleat and a line guide or fair lead kit for the same. The only thing missing is the bracket which can be made or pieced from the manufacture's catalog (I don't have the part number for this item) or you could just buy a (RF57) which has everything except the block.

In Harken parts you could by their (2616) and attach it to a (1573) stand up base. You could also piece it together from parts, though I would expect some savings if it was sold as an assembly.

Some time with a sheet metal brake and assembly effort could yield a nice home made unit for much cheaper.

I wonder about just replacing the sheave, since that is all that is wrong with this block assembly. Any advice to share about this idea?

Greg If all else fails go to Harken Cam base,page 881 West Marine. I use one for my boom line I think I ordered from Beck & Beck. There not as pricey as West. Y'all Come Cap,N Bud

Sheeves are easy to replace and not terribly expensive. All of the mfg offer replacement sheeves. You only need a couple things, diameter and thckness plus pin diameter.

Again just check for example the Schaefer replacement parts lists.

For sheave replacement, isit the normal procedure to drill out the old pin and then replace it with one that requires a keeper pin?

Not knowing who made this thing, I begain looking for sheaves that met the physical dimension of the one I have. Like looking for a needle in a haystack......there are many, many variations out there, but none that fit.

I stumbled onto a nearly exact replacement. Only the base was different and the cleat has metal teeth. I made a new base spacer plate from white oak scrap I had laying around.

Rats! You are right. So much for my attention to detail...not :oops:

Guess it is time to get the drill out and cobble together something from the parts. At least the sheave looks to be the right size. I am still trying to figure out who makes these things and was not able to find a replacement sheave yet. Maybe I will just transfer the becket/strap part?
