I am planning to make a model of my next boat. I have not been able to find a book on modelmaking.

Can someone help me find that excellent series of photos of Joe building his first P22 model? Any other tips on modeling info?

Thanks' date=' Garry[/quote']

"Devlin's Boat Building" has a chapter on making models. See the Amazon page at Devlin's Boatbuilding which lets you peek inside the book (not sure you can get to chapter 9, that has about 15 pages on how to make models from plans.)

Garry,

When I made a model of my Belhaven, I started by copying the plans all to the same scale. On my plans, most of the pages are 3/4" = 1 foot, but some are 1/2" or 1" = 1 foot.

With all of the plans to the same scale, I went to a hobby store and purchased couple sheets of model plywood (3/32" I think). The sheets are 12X24 so to scale, it is one huge piece of 16 foot by 32 foot plywood! No scarfing necessary. You may be able to get by with one sheet, depending on the size of your boat. I also bought some 1/16 X 1/4 (1x4) balsa and basswood. The balsa is much easier to work and splits easily with a razor knife, but tends to break. I switched over to basswood for the trim strips.

I then cut out the plan pieces and taped them to the plywood with box tape. I cut them out with an old pair of heavy sewing scissors (my wife gave them to me since they were no good for cloth anymore).

I used tape and various different glues, even to the point of using some fine cloth to make the butterflies. It was just a matter of following the plans from there.

I learned a lot of lessons from building the model that I will be able to apply as I build the real boat. It was a lot of fun too. My avatar is the completed model.

My apologies to Joe Deep for this. I am not the story teller that he is ...

Thanks for the link and tips. I'm excited about building a model.

This hull will be strip-planked instead of plywood so it will be a slightly different process. I found a strip cutter that may work out well. Otherwise I have a design in mind for a homemade strip cutter.

I also found some fast glues at the hobby store that will be useful to put on numerous strips fairly quickly.

Any tips on finding scale model human forms that can be postioned? I found a site with dimensions, so i may make a couple of wooden models to check the interior dimensions.

You might also try a good quality paper cutter depending on the plywood you get. The stuff I got was easy to cut with scissors, so I think a paper cutter wound work too. After all, paper is just really thin wood :D

You can try stores that carry dollhouses. I have found people in different scales in the past for my daughters' dollhouses. You might also find fixtures that can be converted to marine fixtures for the interior. You will be amazed at the variety ...
