Sailing Experience

Graham, I am currently building one of your designs. I love the looks of the Core Sound boats and hope to use my CS 20 for many years to come.

I think that I have seen references to you living aboard and sailing around the world many years ago.

Are there any magazine articles or books written on your experiences? If so, are they still in publication or is it possible to get reprints of them.

No. I never wanted to write a travelog type book on sailing around the world.

I was in portugeuse Timor in 1975 when civil war broke out. The only other boat there at the time was called Starbound, he wrote a chapter on the incident in his book called Starbound and mentioned us being there with him.

I wrote a few technical articles which were published in Coastal Cruising and Cruising world.

I have just had a short article accepted on designing the CS17 and the Everglades Challenge for Small craft Advisor.

Hey Graham,

Here is a 1985 article that was published in Carolina Cruising later known as Coastal Cruising (I'm not sure how it evolved). This article is about the builder/owner of Liberty Yachts but the 28' boat that I completed from his hull and deck is featured since it was the most recent boat.

We worked to gether to develop the deck design and interior layout for this boat and I did all of the interior work. I'm looking forward to doing it again! The first picture shows me posing while Rosebud was in the shop still under construction. But the rest of the pics show the builder and two friends of miine after Rosebud was completed.

That brings back a few memories. I sailed a lot with Bert. He became editor of the magizine and gave me the grand title of technical editor. The last time I heard of Ron Mercer, he was captain of a ferry out of Southport NC.

I surveyed one of those boats for a friend. It was fairly well built but had a fearsome weather helm.

Being only a coastal and inland water sailor, I have always read the stories of cruisers such as Joshua Slocum, Lin & Larry Pardey and Eric & Susan Hiscock as adventure stories. I never thought of them as travel logs. To me, their books and magazine articles were never about the places they visited, but the journeys they took getting there. Anyway, I am looking forward to reading the article in Small Craft Advisor.
