Stump Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 On Saturday, July 2nd at about 10:00 am I will be finally launching the "Lady Laraine." This historic occurence will be taking place at Warren G. Magnuson Park, off Sand Point in Seattle. My family will be attending, Capt Jake's crew and his beautiful boat, Fire Escape, will be there. Berry is coming down with his crew. I'm hoping Joel et el, will be able to make it and anyone else who happens to be in the area is invited to come, with or with out boats, hang out, have a picnic, and enjoy the day. I can't tell you all what help and inspiration you have been while I puzzled out this project!! E mail or send me a PM and I'll gladly pass on the directions to the park and boat launch that Berry was nice enough to send me :wink: Quote

Barry Pyeatt Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 Yes, I plan on being there too with a crew member. Just had a call back from the network media folks. The U of W Marching Band and Pep Squad has decided that it would be a good thing to do as well. Seafair Pirates are planning on it but it all depends upon whether or not they can get their "Duck" started that morning. Lets see, that makes 4 of the TV channels, at least 3 newspapers, a couple local papers, the Shopping News and Seattle Today. Oh and the local Geico Rep. The news people will monitor the air channels for the choppers that are going to get the live on the water sailing photos for the evening network folks. The Network control vans will set up in the parking lot away from the food tents. They did set up their own catering per your request to not interfere with the visitors. They will coordinate the billing with you later. One of the Tall Ships from the Tacoma Tall Ship celebration was trying to figure out how to get there too; but even with the Ship canal bridges up, they were afraid that they might have too many issues sailing up the canal. The local Pepsi rep wanted to know if they needed to contact the Oscar Meyer people to bring the Wiener Mobile too since they were planing on catering the food pavilion. The beer reps seem upset because you apparently didn't make a selection on time, so none of them are represented although the wineries were happy to provide the tasting tent and onsite sales support. I sure hope I got your address right for the billing. 8) Oh, and the Seattle Police Cadets wanted to know how many Police Cadets that you would need to handle the traffic flow and parking. University Hospital has an aid car available to be onsite for the event along with trained paramedics. Sea Scouts were coordinating with the Seattle Police Safety Patrol boats to help control the on the water yachting interest. The log boom will be in place to control access to the launch while you are there. So there shouldn't be any conflicts there. They asked if you would need more than 3-4 hours for the launch and then what time do you need to have controlled egress. They will coordinate that for you too. They did want to remind you that they will remain on station until you and everyone else has departed the site. They do charge overtime if you are later than 9:00 PM. Then the cleanup crews arive. Nice people from the mayors office were coordinating that for you. Mayor wishes to congratulate you on your launch and thank you for the generous contribution to his re-election fund. Personally I thought that was a little much, but then you know how the politicals like their name in the news, especially when the media turns out in force for a major news event. :wink: The tee shirts, burgees and hats did arrive and the Sea Scouts are setting up the tables and coordinating with the caterer for their participation and all their people wearing the Official Launch Tee Shirts for the day. They think that the shirts are pretty special. Nice of you to donate the proceeds from the sales to their program. See you Saturday at 10. Barry Pyeatt Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Another successful launch of a Weekender to join the Pacific Northwest Fleet. Stump brought his Weekender to Magnuson Park Launch on Lake Washington in Seattle to see if it floats. It did! :shock: His first experience with trailering, launching, sailing and dealing with a couple of died in the wool fanatics about sailing. And he did all of it with flair and excitement. Had the great opportunity to meet him and his great family. Was privileged to be asked to accompany his on his maiden voyage along with his son. He did a nice job of building the Lady Loraine and it was nice to meet the namesake and get to know them a little bit. I'm sure that it will be fun for them to get to know their new Weekender. It handles just fine. Couple new boat launch things to adjust and a couple minor rigging modifications to make but other than that it should be a really fun boat to use. Good day and location for a first launch. The launch site is part of a great area for this kind of boating. Nice wide launch with plenty of capacity for these boats and lots of others as well. Good access and plenty of area for the rest of the family to have fun and a picnic. Winds were light to non-existant so my record for sailing with Capt. Jake is unblemished. He brought his "Fire Escape" along to accompany the Lady Loraine and get some "on the water" shots for the forum. Joel and his lovely wife joined him and were joined by a friend that I brought along for her first experience in a Weekender. So he was fully loaded with plenty of crew. The Lady Loraine handles very well. Very little weather helm and good response to all things that we did under light wind conditions. Surprised both Stump and his son that we could be sailing and actually catching up to Capt. Jake when the "Fire Escape' has more sail area and plenty of light air experience. :roll: But then the Lady Loraine wasn't carrying quite as many crew members as Capt. Jake. As promised, he did have a large turnout and the Seattle Police Patrol boat did swing by to offer their congratulations on his launch and to check out his workmanship and sail management. Happy to say that they were obviously impressed as they moved right along to other more necessary tasks. We paused for a great lunch and some swapping of first experiences by the crew members and then Stump took some family crew members out for their first sail. All and all I would say it was a good day and another successful launch. 8) Quote

All in all, the chatter of Stump, in print, must have been over shadowed by the chatter at the boat ramp, I bet!!!! Fine tune and make the most of the summer time left for this year. Jake who has, from the get go, been helping me with the project from my first sight of a completed weekender to lending me tools. 8) I would also like to thank his Honor the Mayor, the Seattle City Counsel, the Seattle Police Department, Seattle Parks and Recreation, the State of Washington and all the other people who had a hand in getting my boat in the water and allowing me to have a safe first sail. I would also like to thank the precision pontoon flying plane team who made it a real moment to remember when they performed a low level pass over the top of my boat and cut the throttle. :wink: p.s. I was finally able to sleep when I got home, it has been a couple of days. I felt just like a kid at Christmas :roll: :wink: Quote

Nice group of people and everyone had a good time from all that I could tell. Well, yes both Joel and I need to get to work. Joel's wife set a July launch target date for next year for his Weekender. She thinks that any longer than that and she will be forced to go sailing with the rest of us. Mine is ready for glass, nothing else that I can really do until I get it glassed and painted. Then it will be finish the cockpit seat time and glass and paint that. Rigging is all setting in boxes waiting for the boat to be painted. If all goes as planned, it will see water yet this year. Looking forward to seeing The Lady Loraine and some of the other boats up here on the water together one of these days. Should be fun for all of us. Quote

Joel Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Well so much for my attempt at the "longest build time" I have a few more things to finish up around the house then, it's back to boat building. We have some great places to launch here on the peninsula. If any of you guys are interested, I would be happy to show you my favorite spots. I know a state park that actually has a good 1/2 mile of SANDY beach ( a rare thing in the PNW) :usa joel Quote
