Charles Neuman Posted February 24, 2005 Posted February 24, 2005 I noticed that some people make a cutout in the rear deck so that you can mount an outboard on the transom. Does anybody have any advice on doing this? Or pictures? Another option is to attach an engine mount on the transom. Anybody try that approach? Those engine mounts aren't cheap, but they seem convenient. Charles Quote
Tim TITAN Posted February 24, 2005 Posted February 24, 2005 on my CS20 if I ever decide(or have enough extra money to pick up a 4/5 hp outboard), I am going to build a mount out of stainless or aluminum that attaches to the transom and is easily removable and looks great installed, and leaves a nice clean looking transom when the motor is not onboard. I have several different ideas for it. If I get a chance I will try and draw some up and post them. Basically the mount will just slide/clip in. I don't think a deck cutout on the transom for an outboard looks as nice. Also, with a bracket you can adjust the height easily for whatever outboard you can get your hands on. Maybe even get away with a shorter shaft motor if cost and availability of small outboards in your area is limited. The bracket doesn't have to be built to NASA specs either, since you will probably only need to run a 3 or 4 hp motor on the CS17. I've seen ready-made detachable mounts, but they are expensive and dont look nearly as nice installed and when they are detached they leave large brackets on the transom which look terrible. When I build my motor-mount I will post some pictures, but by that time you will probably already have many hours logged on your cs motor. good luck......Tim Quote
Dave Newell Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 Gday - i bought a 17 that has a cut out for the motor - but while it might look neater than a bracket, it is not as practical. the mizzen sheet constantly gets hooked on the motor when running or broad reaching with the sail on the same side as the motor and its a bit fiddly to attach the motor when turning the screws. it also collects water. hope this helps dn Quote

We only take the motor on bigger legs or if wind is looking shaky. I am happy with the rear deck layout which makes this easy as you get a good spot to sit, storage and you can access the transom for the motor without a big thing hanging off the back. We used rubber but it stains, you have to scrub to get it off. The photo there is after a week with the motor on it at Fraser Island. I have bought some linoleum which has a 2mm polyurethane top side which I put against the paint now. Rob Quote

Rob Blackburn Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 had the same guy who made the motor mount do all the stainless stuff. Had him do little plates to put behind the fittings too. The best thing he did was the stainless lip cover for the anchor well. It was really neat. Can send you some close ups if you want. Rob ps he was really cheap too! Quote
