Finally got done plaining, sanding and routing. Round one!!! capt jake, bless you and thank you again for the use of your electric plain. Your generosity allowed me to take several days of hard plaining and shrink it to a matter of hours. I don't care what anyone says (even me.) Your the best!!!! 8)

I'm in the process of getting the fiberglassing materials and, with some more filling and sanding, hope to be ready to glass in a week or so. The push is on to get completed before the cold and rain sets in for good.

Man it's nice to be on a roll again!!!!!

Forgot to ask the questions I had.

1. While evening out the keel, I found several narrow gaps in the lamination. I'm thinking of filling them with epoxy. I am not going to glass the keel so I don't think I'll have to worry about rot? Right?

2. I'm going to use Bondo for the fillet on the keel and to fill any hull issues. (Yes, I've read all the pros and cons, all the bondo will be under glass so I don't think it will be any problem) So the question is how far past the fillets and fill should I take the glass? I'm figureing about 2 inches. Is that enough?

3. I'm planning on 3 gallons of epoxy and 30 yards of glass, 40 inches wide. Is that enough for the outside and cockpit of a Weekender?

1. Pouring unthickened epoxy into the cracks will work fine. It will also be OK to just leave them if you are not glassing the keel and the boat is going to be day sailed, and on the trailer most of the time. The reason is that the water will be able to escape from the wood, and it will dry out each time the boat is put on the trailer. IF, and this probably isn't the case, but IF you had a void way down and you didn't fill it completely with the epoxy, it would be better to not fill it at all ... you don't want to have any spots where a good amount of water can be trapped inside the wood, as it will rot from the inside out. But if the cracks are like I had in my keel, where you can see the bottom of them, its OK to fill them.

2. 2" would be fine. 1" is actually OK. You just want to make sure you have glass and several coats of epoxy to "waterproof" the Bondo.

3. I used 4 gallons, but I have to admit I started using epoxy for everything once I had it. So three gallons is probably OK. 30 yards of glass will certainly do it ... I think the plans call for 20 yards.

Even if you don't get water, you might get bugs in there. I would suggest filling it in - if not with epoxy, then with a caulking product.

All ready fighting bugs...anyone know of a really "killer" bug killer. I got these really ugly beatles with like huge jaws wanting to live in my boat, about 1/4 inch long and brown...nasty things that leave greenish smears when you crush them...I do not like them Sam I am. I do not like them in my boat, I would not like them in a coat. I do not like bugs here or there, I do not like bugs anywhere!!! (with appologies to the Doc.) :wink:

I think they are starting to eat my wood!!!!!!!! :shock: :x :?

Other than the regulat pesticide type sprays, I wonder if something like "Roach Pruf" or the termite dust stuff would work. Its a dry acid powder of some kind that is inert to humans but gets on the bug's antenna and then kills them as they clean themselves (which goes to prove that cleaniness really is next to godliness, at least for poisoned bugs!)

A little known secret by many in the pesticide industry, for roaches is bought in your local grocery stores. Its called Boric Acid. It is repackaged and sold at around 1000 percent markup.

the formula we use is 2 parts boric acid, two parts sugar and 3 parts corn meal, poured into any kind of shallow lid and set back in the dark corners.

Used boric acid when I lived down south in the land of bugs...learned all about roaches then. These things aren't roaches, just ugly. Never saw them before this year. Neighbor states he hadn't either, must be a plague of some type. I wonder what I did? :wink:

Got some concentrated bug killer that might "accidently" fall into the problem areas undiluted. Nuke the baby seals, then shoot them in the dark. :twisted: Just 'cause I live in the NW doesn't mean I'm a environmentalist. Well, off to the slaughter :shock: :? (I think I'll wear gloves )
